A Summer of Roses

I never really appreciated roses until recently. Knowing they were rather fussy about where they lived, I had always considered them the yuppies of the garden. And I was in to hurry to invite them to my garden.
Then I discovered miniature roses, and the first rose I ever bought was a miniature white floribunda. The shockingly white blossoms would age into a hot pink tinged bloom that resembled pink elephant popcorn. Ever had pink elephant popcorn? It is white, with hot pink powered sugar dusting the kernels, and you will eat the whole box.
Last summer, I started to photograph roses, I had avoided it because I felt it was a cliche. But occcasionally I would run across some so breathtaking that I would slip them in.
And now I am so glad that I did shoot them, they have become some of my favorite subjects.
And in roses, I feel that I have discovered a new and exciting friend. One whom I am happy to invite to my garden.

  1. Just gorgeous. Its hard to believe they are miniatures, they have all the charms of their larger brethren too.

    Are they fragrant?

  3. I've always thought of roses a the grand old lady of the garden. You know the one that smells of flowery perfume and wears a big gorgeous hat that is just a bit gawdy but still so very cool! Roses are that cool old lady that every garden just must, must have!

I'm sooooo glad you decided to photograph them, it makes another rainy NW morning a little brighter!!! Thanks, Kim

  8. Zoe, so sorry, I started writing this post last night, I don't think that any of the shots are of miniature roses. They are all of full sized roses. But I will post some shots of miniatures another day.

Bekah, pink popcorn is usually available around Christmas time. It used to be available all the time, but seems to be more of a specialty item now. I will keep a look out for you.

Kim, I love your description of the gaudy lady in the garden being a rose. You are right, and she is a really cool lady, I just never took the time to really get to know her.

Patricia, I am so glad that you got in touch, your story is facinating! I am eager to read more of it.

Hocking Hill, I think with this wintery weather we need all the help we can get for dashes of color.

Lady Fi, you are right, there is no other fragrance like that of a rose.

  10. When we moved to a small village in the country I inherited the previous owners gardens. There were ancient rosebushes everywhere. My husband moved them all and made me a rose garden. I love it. It is a lot of work, they certainly are the divas that I must treat gently. The reward of their beauty is worth it. Your photos are gorgeous.

  15. I've also worried that photographing roses would be too cliche', but I can't seem to get away from doing it. For me, it's the intriguing way that each bloom has a unique way that it curves its petals letting the sun work its magic to create varied colors. Someday, you'll have to come and photograph the roses here at Rosehaven Cottage.
