My Mom bought Turf Toter and I, these matching brown wool dresses, we hated them!
To this day, I can't stand anything around my neck. And I still remember the scratchy, itchy feeling of that wool.
Turf Toter got the worst of the deal, she had to wear hers, and then when I outgrew mine, she had to wear that one also.
She's the lovely brunette, and the baby was a new cousin.

Hi Jen, I have some similar stories that I won't forget! A tweed coat, plaid dress, etc...I had to wear the dress 2 days in a row when we moved because we only had 1 dress packed & my mother wouldn't let me wear pants to school (let alone, jeans!). Jeans weren't even considered until I was in about 8th grade. Ah, the trials and tribulations of growing up:) Merry Christmas! Jan
ReplyDeleteLOL!
ReplyDeleteThe only one that looks happy is the new cousin in her lovely soft sweater!
Jen,
ReplyDeleteI don't like itchy things at my neck either! My mom used to get my hair cut in what she called the pixie look...I blame it all on Disney and Peter Pan! I hated it, she loved it! Btw, you are both lovely. gail
The brown dresses do look a little itchy. My mom loved to dress us in navy. I don't own many navy things these days, except maybe my jeans. Happy holidays, and pretty new header!
ReplyDeleteMine was a similiar dress but of blue plaid but of equally itchy wool...what were our mother's thinking? I have to this day not made my kids wear wool, well except for wool overcoats but that doesn't count! Great post, it brough back memories! Kim
ReplyDeleteFor me, it wasn't clothing, it was the haircuts my Mom gave me. I got a 'pixie cut' and she could never 'quite' get the bangs straight, so they would get shorter & shorter, & shorter. I always ran to the mirror after I managed to escape and would cry "I look like a boy!" It was very traumatic and probably explains my neuroses with hair dressers now. *shiver*
ReplyDeleteHa I was the youngest of 3 girls, so I know the feeling that your sister had. Poor thing:)
ReplyDeletehahaha well..you guys do look cute!
ReplyDeleteLook at the two of you & what lovely posture - nothing like really itchy garments to get you to sit up nice and straight. Love the old photos.
ReplyDeleteA good laugh, Jen. We can all relate (I can't stand turtlenecks either). My older sisters still tease me about my horrid Corduroy zebra stripe pants that my mother thought I looked so good in, she bought me 3 pair (they thought I loved them because it seemed I was always wearing them ... NO ... it was because it was all I had to wear)! Holiday sister hugs and memories ...
ReplyDeleteOh I can't stand itchy wool either! I had a dress with an itchy petticoat when I was 4 or 5. Hated it! It was so pretty (red velvet) but the scratchy tulle was so awful that I couldn't stand to wear it.
ReplyDeleteLucky for you that you were the elder in this case!! LOL! Wool? Surely it's itchy...but warm! Your Momma just wanted you girls to stay warm.....maybe??
