How did we do it?

We are enjoying a surprise visit, from Turf toter, Farmer Tim, and my nephew, Mountain Boy. We love having them visit us, and we are all having a good time. This is a small condo, with only 1 bathroom, 5 people, you do the math. We all make it work. But it does bring to mind, the times when all the out of town relatives would come and visit us when Turf toter and I were kids. Our parents both come from a large family, with lots and lots of Aunties, and Uncles, and tons of cousins. All those large families would come and stay for a extended vacation in our childhood home. In our house with one bathroom. And no one seemed to mind.
How did we do it? Sometimes there were three families staying at our house, over Christmas, and maybe a set of Grandparents. We all managed, but maybe I have a faulty memory. Or maybe the good memories have blocked out the waiting at the door, desperate to be let in. Please! I gotta gooooooooo. I am sure there was some juggling with the bathroom, the one tub, and all those people. But I don't remember any complaints. Just hoards of cousins, huge dinners, and lots of camaraderie.

  1. We never had many people stay with us while I was growing up. To this day, I relish my privacy and struggle not to feel uncomfortable with overnight guests in my home.

  2. I know in my childhood in similar conditions we bathed less often. No one seemed to mind. Sometimes there was a bit of a line for the loo that could be a bit uncomfortable. No one really likes being in the loo queue.

  3. I grew up (family of 5) with one bathroom and lots of holiday visitors, but it just didn't seem to be a problem. Funny how good fellowship and memory making makes it all seem worthwhile!

  4. Yes, I have memories of a lot of relatives in one small home, it was way too much fun so of course the bad memories are blocked. We have five bathrooms in this home, each of our three girls have their own I don't know what the brats would do if they had to wait one second to go in a bathroom, maybe I should do a test and see who wets their pants first..LOL

  5. Its selective memory loss...we rememeber the good and forget the bathroom lines. It is as it should be!

Is that last shot a hydrangea? Lovely shades of pink.

  6. Amazing how we remember only the good things about those kind of visits! Guess we were more used to sharing things then. I slept in a bed with my two sisters and didn't mind...

  7. Isn't incredible the things we think are must needs now, can't live without. I've been there with the one bathroom, now houses have to have more bathrooms than people, heaven forbid anyone has to walk more than 5 feet, all I see is having to clean them all.

  8. What great memories you stirred up. We too only had 3 bedrooms and 1 bathroom when I was growing up. My moms side of the family would all show up (grandparents, aunts and uncles) and we all had such a great time. They didn't bring any kids with them, there were already four of us kids, and we all crammed into that house, sleeping on the floors, bedrooms and everywhere else. That one bathroom sure had to get a workout, but I don't remember that part. All I remember about it was the great time!!

  9. Sounds like a fun get-together. The familyness usually trumps the crowding.

  10. We always had the out house in case of emergency, that is after we got a good and proper bathroom in the house. You just have to make do! And have fun! :)

  11. Us too! We all crammed in to my grandma's house. She only had one bathroom. It was tons of fun.

  13. What wonderful memories you have and are making. I have seven children, four step kids, 5 grandchildren (and more on the way)... When we all get together no one complains (much) about accommodation. We have so much fun when we're together!

  14. It was always fun or fights but in the end it was family. Thanks for helping me remember my good times. Sweet photos.
