The VCR box said it was plug and play. So simple a child could do it.
It took 3 hours to set it up.
It made me wonder if we are becoming as technically illiterate as our parents?
Gar and I are members of the last generation to grow up without computers. We managed to do without one for so long, and now, you would have to pry it from my fingers before I will give it up. Generation VCR is there hope for us?
My parents still cannot program their own VCR, or cell phone. They probably never will be able to. They lack the VCR gene. They were born too soon. They are very accomplished in many other areas, just not technically gifted.
I can operate my sophisticated DSLR camera, print my own pictures, figure out my 4 in one printer/fax/copier/scanner. I managed to set up two blogs,
[ Blogger blogs but still ], and now can even manage to link to another blog. I even understand a little about what HTML code means now.
But I cannot set up a "plug and play" VCR? He says we need to spend more time reading the directions.
Fine, I reply, just go and retrieve them from behind the couch where they are laying in a crumpled heap after you threw them there in disgust.

lol...well you KNOW I can relate. And, you're way ahead of me! I'm still trying to figure out what all the fuss is about this blue ray...I think I'm in trouble...
ReplyDeletethat is funny.. My kids don't even know what a vcr is..
ReplyDeleteIm not electrically inclined i like to say. plus, im really scared of getting zapped. had a bad experience once.
ReplyDeleteOne of my sons sets up all this stuff like home theatres, stereos etc as a business and my VCR is not hooked up nor is the new DVD player he gave us. The old one is but the new one...well. First someone will have to pull out the armoire with the heavy t.v. in it then someone will have to unhook every thing, then hook up the new stuff and clean up the dust elephants (way bigger than bunnies). Who do I know that can do that? Thanks son.
ReplyDeleteYou surely have me beat as well, what the hell is twitter?
ReplyDeleteLOL! Only kids can program that kind of thing! When our DVD player broke down, we bought a Blu-Ray player that can play DVDs .. we only have one Blu-ray disc but it's the future... We can no longer play videos at all...
ReplyDeleteHaha, I'm not the only one!! At least I'm in good company. But I still can't figure out my camera (and it's a simple one) and I still have no idea what HTML means:)
ReplyDeleteI just found your blog, and am enjoying looking at all your beautiful photographs! This story made me laugh, I understand. Some things just refuse to work as they are meant.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your VCR adventures!
I'm in the same boat... and here I thought I was the only one!! *whew*!!
ReplyDeleteI STILL haven't figured out linking, blue rays or even twitter and I keep my blackberries in the fridge, where I'm now assuming it's the wrong place to keep them.
;-)
I'm clueless when it comes to some of this new technology. Glad I have my daughter to help me! And just give me a plain cell phone, all I need is to be able to talk!
ReplyDeleteMe too! I can do lots of stuff, but ask me to set our digital sprinkler system or the microwave timer and I'm clueless!
ReplyDeleteBrenda
I have to have my Grandgirls load my MP3 player! The last VCR we purchased..is difficult to program.. Far Guy set it up..we hardly ever use it. (I just use instant record) We got a new TV in the bedroom..it took us days to learn how to program the remote. We need technology tutors! I don't begin to understand why I would need Blue Tooth Technology or a Blackberry or Blue Ray whatever..:)
ReplyDeleteBAHAHAHAHA I can code basic html, figure out my camera, blogs, photo software and the internet but when it comes to the cell phone settings or the DVD player I just get frustrated. Maybe we are using up our brain on the other stuff:)
ReplyDeleteJust wait a day or so and something new will come along.
ReplyDeleteThis is only one of the many reasons I've got Himself - electrical gubbins and lawnmowering = mans work in my book!
ReplyDeleteThe flowers are stunningly beautiful - you are such a skilled photographer Jen. Thank you for sharing them with us - they really lifted my spirits today.
I used to pride myself in the fact that I could run the VCR, was a whiz on the computer, etc. Now I can't figure out the satellite/dvd player/vcr and to top that all, we have a converter box. UGH! I want a one-stop shop sort of deal.
ReplyDeleteOur kids can't believe we don't have a DVR.
Gorgeous Clivia! I just got my first one last week!
You are far more technically advanced than I ever will be, congratulations!!!
ReplyDeleteThings are never as easy as they seem. My hubbie gets very aggravated when we start to set something up and it's suppose to be easy. Then as you say, 3 hours later it's still not done. That really is aggravating.
