There is something I would like to say....

There is something I would like to say.......but Diane Schuller has done a much better job of it than I can. She has written a thoughtful and interesting post called Dear Diane, I took one of your photos, that's OK isn't it? Well actually now that you ask, NO, it is not OK. And I am only one of the people who share their photos online, that isn't happy about it. Please take the time to read Diane's post, think about it, and share it with as many people as you can. Someday you might thank her for saying what we all would like to have the guts to say. Diane is a natural light, on location photographer in Edmonton, and Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada. She is a amazingly talented photographer, and you are really going to enjoy looking at her site, Diane Schuller Lifestyle Photography. Tell her that I sent you, just remember, hands off her photos. 2. Jen,

The same holds true for artwork. It's a shame that artists and photographers are reduced to putting distracting watermarks on their work to attempt to dissuade pirates. The copyrighted warning seems to have little or no effect as well. The web has created a great opportunity for those who wish to steal to do so, but we have little choice if we wish to get our work out there. Honest folks would never download a piece without permission.

By the way, I'm told that they can successfully remove the watermarks we embed as well. Wouldn't it be great if the genius of these people were directed in positive ways? Just think what crooks could accomplish in a legal way if they simply applied themselves.

Thanks for saying what has needed to be said.

  4. you're incredibly kind with your comments. Thank you for linking to that post. I have written about it before and just now added the links to those posts at the end of this one. It truly is a shame that some people feel they can simply take our photos or other artwork when we have it on display.

On a brighter note, I do hope you and all your wonderful readers are in the spirit of the season!

  5. I don't know if anyone has stolen my photos OR any of my written word for that matter. I sincerely hope not. If they do, I would hope that they at least credit me in some way.

Karma looks after her own. They'll get their comeuppance.

  6. Lovely photo... I'm in two minds: you see, in this day and age, with the advent of Web 2.0. the younger generation is growing up in an atmosphere of sharing everything online, of collaborating - so that for them, it is difficult to perceive that people 'own' things online...

It would be naive of us to think that people will not come in and steal our stuff...

On the other hand, I agree: people really must ask permission and then give full credit because after all, those photos and words might well be someone else's living...

  7. Good article.. I guess it is a problem. I tried to get some of my own stuff back from when my computer crashed last March..what I got from my blog was so low resolution that it was hardly worth printing..so I am not sure that anyone would want anything of mine. I did have one gal that asked..and I told her yes..and she gave me credit for the photo:)
