Textures in Picasa.

Textures have been fascinating bloggers, and photographers for some time now.  The ability to change a photo, age it, or add texture, and colors is tempting.  But until lately I had not dipped my toes into the water.  Thanks to Cindy, at Rosehaven cottage, and to Carolynn from a Glowing Ember for their help in figuring this out.

I noticed that textures I had downloaded from Shadowhouse Creations were showing up in Picasa as photos.  So I decided to play with them to see if I could use them in Picasa.

You can, just not to the extent that it is possible with Photoshop.

All I needed to do, was select a my photo, and pick one of the textures as the second photo.  Then I clicked on collage, and choose multiple exposure.

Picasa melds the two together, and creates a new textured photo, simple, and fast.   Although it is limited, you can create some interesting images with it.

It might be worth giving it a try if you are a Picasa user. And once you try it in Picasa, you are definitely going to want to try it in Photoshop.

It is too much fun!

  2. I use Picassa for basic things like colour/brightness adjustments, cropping, etc. but stay with PhotoShop for anything else. However, I never thought of layering a texture on a photo in Picassa...and I'm looking for an excuse to not do the dishes! ;-)

  3. OOOOhhhhhh great! Just what I need, another way to distract myself from doing work. :-) I love it though, so thanks for letting me know about this. I just came to Picasa back before Christmas, so it's all still huge fun to me.

  4. Hi Jen, yes, I have photoshop still in the box and am looking forward to using it, but not sure when. I do enjoy various effects as it gives us some variety. Have a great one. Diana

  5. Like Jodi, I don't need much to distract me from other tasks that need doing. I've been following, with interest, the developments in Picasa - especially since Google acquired it - and find it quite useful now for managing images. For a free program it's pretty awesome. Photoshop is still my prefered photo editing software, but Picasa and the Canon Digital Photo Pro that came with my camera do great job, too.

Thanks for the post, Jen. There's no end of fun playing with this stuff! Hank

  6. Dear Jen, I really am fascinated with this but possibly, for the present, I must content myself with just looking at the pictures. My most recent photographic experience was in a booth for a new passport portrait!!

  7. I must admit to being kind of thrilled to find out that I am not the only one who is "wasting time" [having way toooooo much fun] with Picasa.

Dinner is always overdone, or late, housework is well it's a lick and a polish. Bills are unpaid.... OK it is not quite that bad. LOL

Great to hear that there are others in the club.

  10. Ummmm....you're welcome...?

I don't remember what gems of wisdom I may have offered on this topic, however, I'm glad to hear whatever it was, was helpful. *smile*

Cindy, on the other hand, is a wealth of information on all things photographic & artsy.

I'm glad to see you're having fun. So much choice. Your photos have always been fantastic!

    Blessings,
    Carolynn

  13. Thanks for the tips. I have wanted to try textures, but only use free software... and was not aware that Picasa could even do this. Exciting news for me.

Can you hear my husband sigh wearily, wondering when I'll next surface from the computer? ;)

  15. Brilliant! I am a Picasa user and find the options limited - so this opens up a whole new world of fun. Of course, like your other visitors, I do need to peel myself away from the computer from time to time... :)

    Thanks for the prod.

Unfortunately, Picasa is not made for Macs - only for PCs... so BOO!
