Learning to let go

2010 03 23 033

Finally Spring feels like it truly is coming around here.  We had a bit of a early start, warm days, and stirring greens.  And then we had a false snowstorm, cooler weather and lots of rain. And yesterday a small hail storm of a temper tantrum.

Some days spring teases us, warm scents of blossoms on the air, with a underlying chill of moisture. Kind of like looking at a pile of paper on the table and realizing that there are bills to be paid in there, it’s not quite what it seems.

Spring can be fickle, warm as a cat sitting in front of the fire, then cool and uncomfortable as rain trickling down your neck.

March just doesn’t seem to want to let go.

Bootsie is not loving his diet, we have contrived various ways to trick him into thinking he is getting more canned food then he does.  And the results however small are showing up, in a trimmer waist line.

The new and much better quality dried food we are slowly, oh so slowly incorporating into his old cheaper dry food is being thrown by the wayside.  Did you know that corn should not be one of the first 3 ingredients in dry cat food? It’s nothing more then a filler.  I had no idea, and I bet that it is the same for dog food. He loves to scrape out a paw full of crunchies, and spread them out, eating only the old favorite, and leaving the new crunchies behind on the carpet.

Can’t fool that kitty, and he doesn’t want to let go of his bad habits.

Back to gardening, my peas are coming up, the garlic is planted for late summer harvest, and the onion seeds are in.

Winter is gone.

And spring is here, even if March doesn’t want to let go.

  1. I love our weather. I just keep telling myself that.
Our cat would not eat the corners of his food. Seriously. If the food was triangular he would nip off the corners and only eat the middle. His dish would have a puddle of corners in it when he was done.
Switched food to a squarish one...same thing...no corners. Gotta be weird to live at my house I say.

  5. Beautiful photos (as usual). *smile*

Hmmm...I should get you to come over and dole out my kibble. I haven't been having as much success at whittling down my waistline as Bootsie has.

  6. We sometimes have to trick M'sieu Chocolat into eating diner, the Ungardener bowls crunchies at him, one by one, till he realises, he is actually hungry, then he feeds himself, from the bowl.

  7. I wish I could get Charlie to eat more. Since he's been sick, he just doesn't have much of an appetite.

  9. Oh Jen, how beautiful! Here in NJ we are having a record amount of rain for the month -- over 10 inches and counting. In fact, today's rainfall may up that number by another five inches! I'm hoping it stops before all the crocus and hellebores are ruined...

  10. Bootsie might like a bit of chicken once in a while. When I boil chicken for soups, I give both dogs and both cats a bit of chicken and the soft cartilage to the dogs. They think they are getting something really special! hehe

Corn is really nasty in pet food. There are many non-grain pet foods available, like Wellness and Orijen. I think Orijen may make kitty crunchies in non-grain too. And it's made in Canada!

I agree, March doesn't want to let go. We're getting more freezing rain tonight, after last night's slushy precipitation and flooded basement. Fun!

  14. Spring isn't here yet... Glad to hear Bootsie is looking trimmer. We give Oscar some pretty expensive dog food but it's worth it for his health and gleaming coat!

  15. I love your budding spring time words. It paints a pleasant picture in my mind. We have bluebonnets and dogwoods in full bloom right now. My experience with kitty cats is that they have a mind of their own. Good luck
