Networking?

 2010 04 11 032

I’ve been away from blogging dealing with some “stuff” lately.  Not any of it has anything to do with photography, which makes me kind of forlorn.

But not all of life can be about following your bliss.  Or can it?

Somehow, and I have no idea how this happened a new laptop followed me home from work the other day.  And just like the cat demanding food at 4:00 am in the morning, it has been taking up much of my free time, and it just won’t give up until it gets it.

We are new to computers, having only had a PC for just over 3 years now.  The feeling that we were the only people left in the world without immediate access to the internet was becoming overwhelming.  Every time we called a service provider, or a bank, they would mention the internet.  “Ah, we don’t have a computer,”  we would say, one guy even went so far as to ask how we managed to live from day to day without one.  That was a little bit of a deciding factor towards getting one.

Owning a computer for the first time is a little overwhelming when you need to learn to decipher “geek.”  Applications, programs, bit’s and bytes?  What?  Are bit’s and bytes not those crunchy snack food?  And applications,  isn’t that for a job?

Also what’s with those keyboards on the lap top?  They are different then my PC, I keep hitting a long line of ///////////, when I want to hit the left hand shift key.  At first I thought there was something wrong with the program, and then, I realized that all I needed to do was reprogram my brain to reach over to the far left when I want to hit the shift key.

This blog post was not typed on the laptop, no one wants to read a lot of ///////////////!!!!!!!!!!!!!!%%%%%%%, instead of what I intended to write. But I am seriously hoping that one day in the near future, I will be able to figure out what all the fancy buttons mean, and actually type out something on it.

One day maybe, but for now I have to go, my kitty/laptop is demanding to be fed.

  1. Ah, make it an adventure. Just like a new kitty, you are just learning about each other. It will have a happy ending, even if it does not seem that way now. Remember, if all else fails, step away from the kitty/computer and let it/you relax. Good luck.

  2. I can relate. Whenever I use my husband's or one of my kid's laptops, I do the same thing. The keyboard is all off compared to the computer I always use. Technology is wonderful in so many ways, but when it takes over your life and interferes with relationships, that's when it is time to put it aside. I've been thinking a lot about that lately. I kind of envy the fact that you didn't have a computer until 3 years ago!

  3. Hi Jen,
Your post made me laugh this morning! I only just got my first computer, a laptop, last year when I returned to school. People would say same things to me... wondering how I could possibly get by without one! I was a little resistant to technology I guess & only using computers every once in a while to check email or update my resume. Now, like everyone else, I don't know what I'd do without it! (Write more letters, I suppose!)
Good luck getting it all figured out!
:) ps~ love your tulips... I've got just a few in the tiny backyard of my apt!

  4. haha you'll get it. It took me quite a while to learn my husbands Mac, and no kidding, just as i read this post I had to stop and ask him why there was something red blinking on the sidebar (apparently Adobe needed an update?). Im 25 and I didnt have internet at home until two years ago (I did have it at work though).

  5. I live in a house of computers, but I really don't know what I'm doing. It's what my husband does for a living, and yet I don't understand half of what comes out of his mouth. I feel your pain.

    Those tulips are stunning!

  6. I love my computer, but I'm not to pleased with our laptop ... just can't seem to get used to everything compacted into a small space. I use it from time to time but always fall back onto my trusty keyboard, screen and tower.

  7. I had a heck of a time with my typing test for work because I had been typing on my laptop for so long.
Now I can suck at typing on two keyboards instead of just one.

  10. Congratulations on going portable! Technology is an exercise in patience.

My first word of advice for any new laptop owner...put clear nail polish over the letters on your keyboard. For some reason, they tend to rub off very quickly. :-0

  12. Jen, I actually hate computers, except how can you get by in life without one now. Everything you need to do has to be done "online", good luck finding a human to help. I think that I need to find a good basic computer course, I am sure I would enjoy it so much more if I knew what I was doing (or my husband did, lol).

  14. You sure have a nice blog for a woman who's only been using a computer for three years. I'm certain you'll get the hang of the laptop. If nothing else, figure out how to upload your photos to it "in the field." That should be incentive enough to help you over the hump ... then let me know how to do it. LOL

  15. Thanks for the encouragement everyone. I am getting the hang of it, but I still type wayyyyyy faster on the regular keyboard.

Somehow I need to figure out file sharing, so I can share photos, and blog posts with each computer. Oh, and how to upload my photos "in the field." LOL. I will persevere, I do kind of love my PC better then the laptop. At least right now.

  16. Beautiful tulips, Jen! When at the lake, I must use my husband's laptop, which is OK and better than nothing :) Adjusting to my new imac (not a laptop), the keyboard much smaller than my old PC, which I thought would be a problem but not so and now loving it. Because this is wireless, I will be taking it with me when we are able to stay longer than a weekend. Good luck with your life. Spring hugs.

  18. Haven't taken the laptop leap yet, but it will be soon. I've had to borrow a laptop for my presentations on ornamental grasses and trying to work someone else's computer in a time crunch and with fifty pairs of eyes on you can give one heart palpitations. Once it even tried to install updates as I was ready to start, then completely shut down...life is stressful enough, no?

  19. Way to go taking the laptop plunge! I am struggling with mine too..a laptop is different..I think that the file sharing will be limited for me..I have so many photos.
The tulips are beautiful..the best I have seen this year!!
I emailed you..hope you got it:)

  20. Hi Jen
This is Nothing New Nothing Wasted checking you out now! lol
I am new to blogging - only started a few weeks ago... but I have to say for someone who isn't too 'geeky' you have a beautiful blog! Far superior to mine... I only just figured out how to keep up with the comments! haha
I'd love to pick your brain about gardening - we are new to it this year, as we speak my husband is filling the 'flower' beds (now food beds) with dirt. So... what is next? Where do we get, or do we need organic seeds?

  22. The tulips are just so pretty!
I cannot get used to the keyboard on a laptop and when I use one I always need a mouse. I bet you'll have yours figured out in no time :)
PS I hope you've been having the same warm and sunny days we've been having.

  23. You'll get used to it... Love the cheerful photos!

  24. I love my laptop because I can blog anyway with the wireless and Internet connection, but I can so relate with the keys being different. I've got a desktop computer for my job, laptop for personal use, and 2 different types of blackberry phones and they all have slightly different keyboards. Boy do I get confused all the time and my brain just freezes... as I think to myself..."which keyboard am I on now and where is that darn key I want to type!" LOL

  25. I'd love to have a laptop! I never even thought about how the keyboards are so different. I can see how you would have to get used to it. Ah well, I got used to the computer keyboard after electric typewriters, and befoe that manual typewriters, remember those? Oops giving away my age again.

  26. This is a genius post, Jen, geek or not! I am amazed at the lack of computer, wondering what we ever did without one. We still don't know what any of the F-number keys are, being too old to have covered that in school like the kids did. Trial and error, works for us and perhaps you too. :-)

  27. Hi Jen, You can get a keyboard to hook into your laptop and a monitor which will making viewing what you are doing easier. I feel for you with all the 'geek' stuff to sort thru and learn! Lovely Lovely photos of your tulips!!

  28. Jen, Technology is a double-edged sword, and that goes for the internet. I sometimes want to unplug all of these gadgets in my house, but then, where would I go for all of my information? I've been trained too long to find instantaneous answers just by clicking open the net. Still, I think we're bombarded by too much these days - too many stimuli, too much information. I find myself longing to move to the back country where no cell phones, wi-fi or internet reach. In fact, I'm planning a vacation right now for that very purpose - get away from technology completely for at least a week.

  29. Oh how cute, your 'kitty laptop';-) I use only my laptop now...and my ///////is the next key over from my far Right shift key. Even laptops are different from each other! It is funny (or scary?) that many cannot LIVE without a computer. Hmm. I know I spend more time on my laptop (or any computer, I'm sure, if I didn't have a laptop) than I should. And I'm tired of it, too! I honestly do not like sitting here, staring at the keyboard, screen, etc., but I LIKE communicating w/my blogging friends. SO what else is there, or other way, is there, to do that//////? Oops, the ////is also the same key the ??? is on, and if you forget to hit the Left shiftkey, well, you can see what just happened;-) Happy Spring, Jen, your tulips are lovely!
