The good, the bad, and the wormy

 2010 06 24_0114

When you are a gardener, you come across all types of garden pests. They are nasty, that’s why they call them pests.

So the other day when a friend and I decided to go for a walk, two nicely dressed  middle[ahem ]aged women, little did we know that we would have a upsetting encounter with a very aggressive worm.

Our destination was Dunsmuir community gardens in Crescent Beach, near White Rock.  Many people stroll through these picturesque gardens admiring the community plots.  With a huge waiting list it’s hard to get a plot, and some plots have remained with the same gardener for decades.

We quietly wandered, not touching anything, with me taking the occasional macro photo. There is no signage saying “private, or do not enter.” These are public garden plots owned by the City of Surrey.  Many people come and go without any hassle.

Then we encountered the “bad worm” who at first was fairly pleasant to us.  She described a huge celery like plant in her plot as the “Maggi plant” if you are of Dutch descent, you will instantly recognize the name Maggi as a aromatic seasoning, it’s delicious. She even offered us a leaf to crush and smell.

Flowerishous and I had wandered a little further, when the bad worm came back at us with a aggressive demeanor asking if we had a plot in the community gardens. Caught off guard I said no, I was a blogger, and was just taking a few pictures.

That set her off on a tirade about the internet, photographers, and those who may look innocent, but are only out to steal the precious plants from the community gardeners.  My guess is that I shouldn’t have told her I was a blogger.  I never told her that I was going to publish anything, so I have no idea what she was objecting to.

You might be taking photos and putting them online for everyone to see,” snarled the nasty worm. If the worm had spent some time on the internet she might notice that there is a Flickr site, and a website specifically for this community garden, looks like I am not the only one who admires the beauty of this place.

All we were doing was innocently walking through and admiring the flowers, as so many others have done for decades.

We left, and as we went we checked with another long time extremely pleasant gardener who said there were no restrictions on who might venture into this little piece of paradise.

“And that this was a very bad year for garden pests.”

Sounds like one bad worm in a otherwise beautiful apple.

Don’t worry, they sprayed with a organic pesticide after we left.

  1. I usually just step on the ones bothering me. Very organic.

  2. This bad worm does indeed sound like a pest. Gardeners I know are incredibly eager to share photos of their plants and most everything else about their gardens.

  3. some people aren't happy unless they are unhappy.
i think that it would be quite an effort to stay that sour when you are surrounded with all that beauty.
i hope that you enjoyed your day despite the bugs.

  4. Jen, you seem to be having such bad luck lately with very unpleasant people. It is such a shame, usually gardeners are very friendly,(and love to share).

  5. I'm sorry Jen that you had such an unpleasant experience in such pleasant place! Probably, the word blogger is associated, in some minds, with 'robber', 'begger', 'burglar', 'mugger'...

  6. Jen, I believe some worms/slugs like beer. I wonder if this one would have like one, two or three. perhaps she would have mellowed out. 'Grin'

  7. It sounds like a lovely place Jen, despite that bad worm. I lived in Malaysia for 4 years, Maggi flavourings where a staple over there.

  8. Wow. That kind of attitude is really sad, as well as unpleasant. What could have been a really amazing experience for everyone was turned sour by, an aptly named, worm. Poor woman must lead a very lonely, miserable life.

  9. Perhaps she was having a "menopausal moment", this little worm. At any rate, nasty is nasty.

  10. I guess I am just finding out where all of the garden pests hang out. My friend has wandered through there so many times, and never encountered such nastiness.

This is the third encounter with someone objecting to my taking photos in public. But I am not alone, the more photography blogs I read, the more I see it happening.

I think every organization has a watchdog kind of person, and we unfortunately ran into her. Misguided as she was, she probably only thought she was doing the correct thing.

After all, two middle aged women, wearing only T-shirts and pants, can hide a lot of hosta's can't they?

  12. I love the last line! So perfect! At least you had the wherewithal to ask another gardener if it was indeed okay to be there and take photos. And I'm glad you shared them on your "evil blog". ;-)

  13. You never know what kind of encounters you will have when you set off for a walk! But you can be sure...it's always interesting! And there are always photos to be taken! Enjoy your day! ♥ Beware of bad worms! ♥

  14. It's always so depressing to run into worms! Usually gardeners are the kindest most sharing folks in the world. Your worm has some other issues that have nothing to do with photography.

  15. That's too bad that one bad worm interfered with an otherwise beautiful walk. What does she expect in a public space? It seems not the public.

  16. She sounds horrid..and should be squashed. I would be so happy to meet you on a chance encounter in a garden..I would hug you! This worm is obviously an idiot..and missed out on a great opportunity. Sad isn't it when you cannot even take photos of flowers..people I can understand not everyone wan't their face out there..but flowers..give me a break. I am sorry that this happened to you..do not let it keep you from keeping on:)

  17. It does seem strange that she'd get so upset. Most gardeners are proud of their garden. It sounds like a really neat place. I love that shot of the gate with the horseshoe.

  18. Jen girl you threw me totally off with your original post title .. I had expected .. literally .. a worm ! LOL
This whole adventure had me totally enthralled .. I am afraid to say that I probably would have come back at this "worm" with a tirade of my own, about said WORMS and THIER opinions .. and the fact that this is a public site .. girl, you should have had me with YOU and Flowerishoush !!! Bark Bark Growl ;-) LOL

  21. What gorgeous shots! And I'm amazed - why on earth would someone object to you photographing flowers? Maybe she has a secret garden?

  22. Hi Jen, sorry to hear about your encounter! I hope the woman was embarrassed later. We all meet a worm now and then - just think how horrible it must be to actually be that person...!

  23. ROFL...yes garden pests are annoying but usually only destructive when they come in bunches. A single pest here and there can be ignore...or sprayed! Kim
