Surprise sunflowers

 2010 08 29_2095

Condo living is OK, just OK, sharing laundry facilities with an entire floor, noisy 2 am neighbors that don’t care about how sound carries.  And all the rules that it seems everyone ignores, no laundry after 10:00, no noise after 10:00, don’t park in your neighbors spot, those boring kind of rules.

Along with the nosy neighbor in the apartment across the street who “you hooooo’s“ me when I am bafffed out on the couch.  Startling the stuffing out of me, “where did that voice come from, and who is she calling, ME?  I don’t believe it, it’s over a 150 feet, and she can see me?  OH, no!

We are pretty respectful of all the rules, with one small exception. “Don’t feed the birds”

As far as breaking the rules, it’s pretty small in my estimation, and since my neighbor who is elderly, and a very decent woman does it, I am thinking that it’s while not OK, it’s not a true biggy.

So we feed the birds, and have been doing it for sometime.  I am almost hanging my head in shame here - not!

I obey every road rule, I am quiet, and respectful of everyone else.

My babies, the birds need something to eat on a regular basis. We were feeding them mixed bird seed, and not realizing that they didn’t like it.  They were picking through and only eating the black oil sunflower seeds.  Once we changed over to sunflower seeds, it was perfect. No more spilled seed, no unsightly cream colored hulls, that showed up all winter against the black soil.

And now we have a surprise bonus of sunflowers. They are so cute, and only 2 feet tall, with tiny little yellow heads. They are just babies, and not quite open yet. But a real bonus instead of the weeds that used to grow there.  I am definitely going to be feeding the birds black sunflower seeds when we get our farm.

  2. Applause on feeding the birds in spite of such a rediculous rule...I had a huge patch of sunflowers show up in the middle of my cucumber patch that the squirrels planted from the small black oil sunflower seeds that they steal from the feeders. I love those kinds of surprises.

  3. Those photos are gorgeous. The last few years we have been feeding "our" birds the no sprout birdseed. The hulls of the seeds are broken so they don't sprout if on the ground. I've loved not having to worry about sprouting grasses. Your photos make me want to change my mind, however. A few sunflowers below the birdfeeders don't sound half bad!

  4. Don't know if I lost my comment so here goes again on the jist of it...
Applause on breaking that rule....who doesn't love to feed and watch the birds...proud of your insistence.
We had a clump of sunflowers show up in the middle of the cuc patch...planted, no doubt by the squirrels that steal seed from the feeders.
    Gotta love it!

  5. We switched to black oil sunflower seeds about a year ago and the birds have been in heaven. I have to scoop up all the hulls from time to time because they can get to be a couple of inches deep under the feeder, but I don't mind that. Much better than the weeds that grew from the mixed seed. And I had a volunteer sunflower this year, too - but only one - wish I'd have more! Hooray for you for feeding the birds!

  9. It's a stupid rule. Why can't you feed the birds? Are they worried that spilled seed will attract varmints, maybe? Worried that irresponsible people will make a mess and not clean it up? That little seeds will germinate and make a mess? I suppose these are valid concerns but most people who feed birds are responsible caretakers of the earth. Keep the sunflowers and the sunflower seed. If they don't like it just plead ignorance.

  11. G'day sweet Jen ~
Well, of course you are going to feed the birds. Rules are made to be broken ... our little fellas left us some exquisite sunflowers this summer.

    Have a beautiful summer's day ~

  12. Ha! I would be breaking that rule too..we only feed the black sunflower seeds..but have no sprouting sunflowers in our yard..maybe someday! So what happens to you if you break the rules? Do you have to stand in a corner..or what..do they give you a fine?..or make you sit outside with a dunce hat on? :)

  13. I can almost feel the atmosphere living in such place as i read through your post.... but that sunflower is a real tiny gem. Birds don't seem to bother my sea of sunflowers here. Oh, Malaysian birds are afraid of large yellow eye balls and long yellow eye lashes!! ~bangchik

  16. Didn't I say you have a knack for sunflowers?

I got my card order today and they are gorgeous! Hallmark should envy the baby shoes shot, and the warm feel of the Home Tweet Home birdnest card and the antique rose postcards is even better than in your catalog. Just beautiful.

  19. Reading this reminded me of why we left Vancouver and apartment's behind for the east coast. Who makes these rules anyway? I really hope you get your farm. I know how it's made a world of difference to us and I can see you would love it just as much as we do. In the meantime enjoy the lovely flowers and birds.
