All that glitters…is probably sticking to my fingers

2010 12 13_0124

It started innocently enough, browsing some blogs, looking at the lovely glittery ornaments that they claimed were easy to make.  Just brush on Modge Podge, and sprinkle with glitter.

Voila, done, a perfect sparkly Christmas ready for your photo shoot.

And then one day in the dollar store, I came across these sparkly gems, and the auburn colored sequins.

They had me at sparkly. So nicely packaged, and in my color scheme, I was seduced.

Hook, line, and paintbrush.

I purchased some cheap ball shaped ornaments, and started to brush on the glue.  Only problem was, it stuck...to everything.  My beautiful antique desk, the paper, the paintbrush, [well it was kind of a long phone conversation, I forgot about it], it seemed that it stuck to everything but the glitter.

There was glitter on my face, on the cat, on the kitchen floor two rooms away. Glitter on my socks, on the table, and on the camera lens.

And just when I would get one half of the ball covered in sticky glue, and sprinkled glitter,

down would

                      fall

                                     the ball.

Onto the carpet.  Where it spread it’s glittery gluey joy everywhere.

Did I give up?  No.  I persevered, I don’t know why.  There were so many more projects waiting for me to get to.

But the lure of the glitter was glossy and shiny.

Each night I would do another small segment, glue, spread, and glitter.  Then drop it, and clean up the mess.

Over and over, until finally...

I went out and bought some preglittered balls, and all was well.

I will leave the glitter to those without sticky fingers.

  1. Love those colors! WHat will you do with all those stones? I think you should give the ornmanets another try. They would be gorgeous on my tree! Merry Christmas!

  3. I'm not usually tempted by glitter, but I was cheering you on, sure that the ornaments would turn out lovely - you have such a great eye for design. Glad to know that although it didn't turn out the way you hoped, there was a happy ending. Enjoy your ornaments and have a wonderful Christmas!

  8. I know it didn't seem funny at the time, but you've certainly made it into a very humorous tale of glittery woe. I have the same problem with glitter whenever I break it out. Yet I can't seem to stay away from buying the pretty bottle when I see them. What is wrong with us???? :-)

  9. I thought you were going to pull through, and even though you were thwarted, I still thought they were pretty neat.

  10. All, this is a tongue in cheek post, I did finish the balls. Even though I consider myself quite the creative crafty, I have to admit this glue and glitter almost did me in. It was a combo of not enough time, and not the right tools.

Maybe next time I will start earlier, like in June maybe?

  12. Jen,

I just LOVE your writing! You always make me laugh! And this post especially because I totally identify with the whole glitter issue.

We enjoy wrapping our presents fancy for Christmas, but much of the pretties that we use in the wrapping process are COATED in glitter, and thus when we come out the otherside of wrapping everything that was with 20 feet and that had even a hint of contact with any part of us is coated in glitter. It adds a lovely festive touch to the whole house.... whether we wanted it or not! You are BRAVE for taking on glitter with glue in the equation, I think those ornaments might have won if I had taken them on. And I promise if I even tried at this craft I would have had glitter glued to everything, whether it was stationary or mobile (like the dogs), except for the ornaments....!

  15. I've been running around with glue, tiny bits of paper, and glitter stuck to my clothes and me since forever.
I recently came up with a technique. I spread a large sheet of aluminum foil out on the table. I glue on the right side & clean up glue drops w/ a wet paper towel as I work - and then I glitter on the left side, keeping glue & glitter separate. When I'm done, I fold up the aluminum foil, make a lip at one end, and pour the unused glitter back in the jar.
I still walk around with glitter on my face, in my hair & on my clothes, but it's not as messy as it used to be! :)

  18. Glitter plus glue would be one big mess around here, especially with a 4 year old that would want to help. The Christmas ornaments turned out very pretty, love the color!
    Merry Christmas!

  19. oh the joys of making crafts. Of course they don't mention that part when they're describing the wonderful things you can make. Then again, maybe it's just me that can't seem to do anything without making a mess.
