Life’s too short to eat cheap chocolate, and other random thoughts.

Bird's Nest textured photo

Life is short, so don’t waste your calories on cheap chocolate.

Words to live by.

I purchased one of those “sound machines” the other day, it can play a selection of soothing sounds, from ocean surf, to rain on the roof, and even birdsong. It’s supposed to calm everyone down before we go to sleep.

Bootsie is totally fascinated with the possibility that little birds may be living in that small device.  He stares at it for ages, waiting to see some movement. The twittering is calming him, but he still expects to see feathers fly from this machine.

That makes it completely worth the price I paid for it.

And I bought some really, really good chocolate the other day, made locally they were doing a food demo where I work.  It tastes like chocolate, and the fillings are delish.

Again, totally worth it.

My garden, as it looks right now, my huge mess.  But did you realize it’s better not to deadhead in the fall, besides leaving some food for the birds, you give perennials more winter protection.

Watching the birds as they flit from branch to branch, gathering seeds, munching on berries makes any mess in the garden totally worth it.

So cherish what you have in front of you, and don’t waste your calories on cheap chocolate.

  2. Hi, Jen;
Locally made chocolate! Oh, yum! We've got a little place like that in town, as well. You're inspiring me to go pay them a visit. I skip the deadheading, too. The tall stalks add some winter interest but it also helps the snow to drift around them and provide some much needed moisture.

    Merry Christmas!

  3. Lovely images and thoughts Jen! We might try to always buy "Fair Trade" and organic chocolate! Cheap chocolate most likely means child labor. ;>( Happy Solstice to you and Bootsie too! ;>)

(Except perhaps, Cadbury's twirls with a cup of tea. Sorry!)

    Happy Christmas.x

  5. We have 'sleep machines' for our children's rooms and love them. And I hear you about great chocolate - yesterday a friend dropped by a plate of goodies with the most amazing homemade truffle. I kept mmming and oohing and ahhing with each bite. Those calories were definitely worth it ;-)

  9. Garden, a little bit messy is natural to birds and insects.

  10. I sometimes think how excited the birds must be to find a leftover summer treat in the midst of winter. Like finding a solitary piece of dark chocolate hidden away in the cupboard late at night...

  11. I agree, always buy the best chocolate, nothing else compares. I don't do a lot of deadheading in the late Fall, but leave the seed heads for the many feathered friends that visit the garden. Plus the added bonus is that some of the seeds drop and Nature does its thing by letting new plants grow.

  15. Thank you! Finally someone else that supports my thoughts on not deadheading in the fall. Every time I tell someone why my garden looks a little "shaggy" with the gangly sunflower stalks leaning this way and that, I get this look like they're thinking, "Hmmmm... how long did it take you to think up that excuse?" But it's worth it just to get to see the oak titmice and bushtits that I can only see when they come down to dine on the heads of the dead flowers.
