There’s JOY in this color

2010 11 24_4476-1

Color has always been extremely important to me, it affects the way I feel about many things, and especially since the time I came back from camp to find my entire bedroom decor redone red.  I like red, in small doses, but red curtains, and a red bedspread, and red patterned wallpaper? I know my Mom meant well, and it was the 70’s... still I did appreciate having something different.

And let’s say that it went really well with the canary yellow kitchen we had then.

Now it’s a new world, and a new century.

Where we have lovely choices like this muted turquoise for Christmas, yes it’s non traditional, but it’s so pretty.  Having limited space, and lacking a coffee table, I made use of this rather odd cutout in the wall between our kitchen, and our living room.  I love the way the chocolate bounces off of the robins egg blue. Ohhhh I love this color.

It makes my heart sing.

But to be honest, I don’t know if I would be brave enough to have a house painted this color.  The owner who is a wonderful interesting person, said that in Montreal many houses are painted this bright and cheerful tone.

I just know that this color brings me JOY when it’s in small doses.

And I adore those black wooden letters.

So what’s your favorite Christmas color combo?

  1. I love those colors -- I must be a bit of a traditionalist because I go for white, red and green! -- but I agree about the small doses!

  2. I love turquoise too Jen. I think it is beautiful with the brown in your pine cones. Lovely idea. I love the color weathered on the house and garage as well. Interesting how the colors are broken up a bit with the muted browns of nature in both compositions. Joy to you!

  3. That sort of combination has appealed to me ever since I read that it was traditional for a particular pattern in Chinese silk carpets. Soft sky blue, a gentle stone/earthy colour and off-white. Serene and peaceful. Down by the seashore colours. The sky and water, the sand and rocks, the foam.

  5. Oh my goodness, I don't believe it! I've just decorated my bedroom in a 'soft truffle' shade of light brown and I've got turquoise fabric for the curtains!
Please can I borrow your decorations, they'd fit in perfectly!

  7. Turquoise is such an in designer color. It is in all the interior rags in beach front homes and has been much celebrated as a Christmas color in really upscale homes in New England coastal homes. I love it too. It is a happy and uplifting color that adds pop to any occasion. My color for Christmas in one room is lime green, another hot fare currently.

  8. I just saw a container of Christmas bulbs in a store that was a mix of that blue and a green color, darker than celery, that looked so gorgeous together.
I am not a big fan of the color blue but I do like this shade.

  9. Jen - your 'Joy' photo is like an invitation to come in a visit a while. The color combination is outstanding and even feels a little bit 'retro' - something from the 60's (turquoise & silver), but with a fresh dark chocolate accent. Most excellent!

  10. It is a lovely color..reminiscent of water and sand..I really like it! I like most all normal Christmas colors..but there is an old Orange Shiny Brite ornament that I really..really love..I have two of them..maybe three..tops. Next to the Orange..I love Red..and Sapphire Blue..I have several that are a celery green color too..there is something about the old colors that draw me in:)

  11. I was looking for pale turqoise balls for the tree last year and couldn't find any, but was so happy to see them everywhere this year. Maybe I love that color so much because it reminds me of tropical seas during the cold winter? Or maybe shades of blue-green have always been a favorite and I'm just relieved they're back in style for a while :-)

  14. Very festive indeed! I love blue and chocolate together! I like an assortment of colors. I have a tree with red/gold poinsettias with red and gold ornaments.

  15. I'm incredibly boring and would find Christmas odd if it weren't red and green.

I like the house colour. It seems quite restrained and elegant.
