Ocean of icicles

2010 12 30_0265

Sometimes we take the accessibility of the ocean for granted.

It’s a destination for a few too many people in the summer, too crowded, and too busy for me.

Although... I love the winter days when I can almost have the beach to myself.

The other morning I knew that we would have a spectacular sunrise, and I planned on hitting the beach and capturing it.

It was cold, pretty COLD, but beautiful.

There were some diehards determined to walk the pier, even if it was a bit too icy for many people.

I caught my breath just before it became icicles, as the rising sun tickled my face.

I had been seeking a bit of peace and quiet, but even the ducks were drowned out by the sounds of early morning construction workers trying to “get er done.” This seemed to be one guy’s favourite phrase, and believe me, if I had to work out there in the cold, dark morning, I too would be shouting “get er done” in the hopes of making the work day go faster.

Sound carries across the water, especially in the winter, and I felt sorry for the neighbouring condo dwellers woken up so early.

The sunrise should be a consolation though.  Just imagine, every sunny morning for a week, waking to this.

Breathtaking view, and then...

“get er done.”

  1. There have been some amazing sunrises around here lately. I love that shot of the icy pier.
I posted two pics that were taken on the same morning, one by me at home and the other taken by my husband on his way back from the cabin. I find it very funny that we were both photographing the same thing at almost the same time on Friday. We are so perfect together, lol.

  2. Beautiful Jen! The rose light of the sky and water even with a chill . . . lovely. What a handsome pier.

  3. Wow. So gorgeous! I can't pry myself out of bed that early, much less get outside in that kind of cold. So glad you did, though.

  11. Lovely shots of the pier!
I spent many an hour there as a kid, taking dreaded swimming lessons in the long gone 'tank' at the end. Then having to ride my bike home all the way up that hill.... One way to warm up after taking swimming lessons in the often cold ocean.

  12. Absolutely GORGEOUS!You definitely got er done! The real bonus here is we get to enjoy the images sans the construction workers braying. Thanks for getting out of bed for all of us-I hope you were dressed warm enough. Hugs and blessings- Teri

  14. Beautiful shots. The ubiquity of the mountains is another thing that never fails to impress me in the Lower Mainland. Oceans and mountains everywhere - we must be appreciative as we slog through these rainier days!

  15. Lovely, Jen. The most breath taking shots are always found by the early riser. Thank you for sharing. I love the ocean, but no longer live near.

  16. Yes, you are so fortunate to live near the ocean! I know some people who go to the Oregon coast in winter to listen to the sound of storms. Fantastic pictures Jen!

  19. You are such a beautiful story teller! I love it. You had a beautiful morning to enjoy.

I love going to Semiahmoo and looking through their little view scopes across the water. So many more people in your community use the beaches than on the US side. Its amazing! I love that your city has the beach as public access, there for everyone to enjoy!

Thank you for sharing your beautiful experience!
