Bootsie went out on a Sunday morning, and came back... just not himself. It was quick, and subtle. Normally a not too active cat with a definite routine it was hardly noticeable that at first he wasn’t feeling well.
He moved less, slept more, he still ate and drank. It was just before Christmas and with both of us working all hours of the day [or so it felt], it went unnoticed for a day that he wasn’t eating as much as usual. It was when he refused to get up and eat that we got really, really worried. This is a cat that loves his food.
The night before the vet visit I woke up every few hours to try and encouraging him to lick water from my finger. When he stopped doing even that, I knew that morning couldn’t come soon enough. Many times I reached over to see if he was still breathing.
He didn’t like the car ride at all, going from a languid and limp kitty that looked like he had spent the last few days on a bender and sleeping it off in his wrinkled pyjama's to a howling banshee. Deep muttering moans, cry’s that tore out my heart. The car stalling in the middle of the intersection in the pouring rain, only added to the misery.
At the vet’s he howled, complained, and cried... until the vet entered the exam room. Then in a miraculous change of heart, he stalked the counter tops and purred. Delighted to rub again the vet’s sleeve. “Are you sure he is sick?”
“This is how a normal cat acts” I was told, not a sick cat.
A temperature of 41 c. [105.8, and high for a cat] confirmed that he was a very sick kitty. Close to convulsions, and dehydrated. They kept him for the day, gave fluids, a antibiotics shot, shaved his neck, and leg for the IV.
We were told that most likely he had crossed paths with another virus infected kitty. Loosing the fight was the least of his worries.
He perked up the next day, looking for food, drinking water, and purring.
But by the end of the week he started to get languid, tired, and just not himself again. Another trip to the vet, disbelief on their faces, “he can’t be sick” he is acting normal.”
“I know my cat, he’s sick again, yes he’s eating and drinking, but he is sick again.”
Bootsies temperature was a shock to the vet, he didn’t act sick at the office and they couldn’t believe it was that high again.
Antibiotics were prescribed, two a day. Don’t believe the videos, or the vet when they show you how easy it is to pill a cat. They don’t have the Boo to deal with. As soon as the antibiotics started to work wonders, he refused to take them.
With many foaming mouths, and trips around the living room, lots of pills discarded, we both started to dread 10 am, and 10 pm. But somehow we persevered, and he finished that course of pills, and has fully recovered. The only reminders left are the bald spots on his throat, and leg where they shaved his fur, it refuses to grow back.
We love him dearly, and ...now I can understand why some people will pay thousands of dollars at the vet’s just to have their beloved pet well.
There was a point in that office, when I would have given anything to have him well, and that is something I never thought I would say. I had always wondered why people choose to go that route. Now I have my answer.
If you are a pet person, you will fully understand. If you are not, then there is no need to explain.

I understand. Glad Boo is doing better.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad he's better and hope he stays that way. Animals simply entangle our hearts.
ReplyDeleteMy son is a vet tech and he sees people go to all extremes to heal their animals. He was actually running around a neigborhood helping an older man locate his animal last night. God Bootsie is better.
ReplyDeleteJen~
ReplyDeleteMe.. yep ! a cat mama and lover of all God's furry wonders.. I FULLY UNDERSTAND!
the anguish, the suffering of both you and Bootsie.. yep when mine are under the weather and heading to the vet, yes $ are meaningless where MY Furbabies are concerned!
thanks for sharing..
so glad your beloved Bootsie is on the mend!
warm sandy hugs,,
Loui♥
I am glad he is better..but I wonder what the root of the problem was. Pills are no fun to shove down a cats throat..often that is the only way to get the pill down them, and it is never pretty. Poor Bootsie..his fur will grow back..in the meantime..get him to eat chipped ice out of your hand..it will help if he gets sick again.
ReplyDeleteHaving pets is sometimes not easy:)
I think you know which side I fall on.
ReplyDeletePoor Bootsie. So glad he has someone like you looking out for him. Goodness, it sounds like it was a nasty virus to affect him so harshly.
As for all the propaganda about Easy as 1, 2, 3 pill giving for cats, that's a load of hooey. I've never seen a video on it, but I'm willing to bet it's all computer generated. I avoid pills if I can, opting for a liquid version whenever possible. Unfortunately, it's not always possible.
Big Healing Hugs, all 'round.
Jen, I'm so sorry you had to go through that and I'm really glad you perservered in making the vet look at your cat. They are such subtle animals and only if you know their every mood can you detect the small changes that will indicate sickness. We named our cat Gino because when we first got him he ended up 4 days at the vets with a severe respiratory infection. We spent a 'g-note' on medical bills but in the 6 years since he's been worth every penny.
ReplyDeleteI have always known/understood how much you love Boo. I am so happy to hear he has recovered. In the past year, I have had two very scary incidents with almost losing one of our cats. I certainly know the heartache and am glad to still have my clan. I'm so happy he is back home with you.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad he is doing better. Experiences like that are scary and worrisome to say the least!
ReplyDeleteAn anxious read.
ReplyDeleteGlad he is well.
Hope he stays that way.
Lucy
I told you earlier that Muddy Boot Dreams wouldn't be the same without Bootsie...so of course I'm happy for you!
ReplyDeleteWe lost our cat in the fall. He'd been 'unwell' for quite a long time. I didn't want to blog about it...but yes, I understand.
Was holding my breath, glad he pulled thru. Poor cat ... last time Aragon needed antibiotics, she got an injection. Wonderful, no pills!!
ReplyDeleteI totally understand Jen...I am so glad Boo is better. gail
ReplyDeleteThankfully kitty recovered. We had a golden retriever that we so loved. A bad limp turned out to be a large tumor. We had the leg removed. She was doing so well, but alas succumbed. She just collapsed at my feet and was gone. We love our dear pet children, don't we. cheers. ann
ReplyDeleteOh noooo. Poor kitty. If he gets sick again get the liquid antibiotics. Get down on your knees and place kitty firmly between them with your ankles crossed behind you so he can't back his way through them.
ReplyDeleteOne hand under his chin the other slowly squirting the medicine inside his cheek. He will not take it all but you can put it on his paws and he will lick the rest of it off. No matter how gross it tastes he will lick it off his paws.
Oh poor kitty. Scary for you:( I am glad to hear he is doing better. It is true spending money on our fur babies is worth it if it gets them to feeling better!
ReplyDeleteOh goodness - what a nightmare... Thankfully one that has a happy ending. As you know, I'm a dog owner so I totally understand your feelings!
ReplyDeleteSo glad Bootsie is feeling better! A sick pet is very distressing. I once ran up vet bills on a sick dog and I ended up selling my car to pay them off. But the dog was worth it!
ReplyDeleteYes, been there, done that. It's horrible. So glad to hear that Bootsie is better. It takes months for a shaved area to grow back.
ReplyDeleteThat must have been truly horrid for you. So glad he is back to normal, albeit with a bald patch. Do cats tease other cats?!
ReplyDeleteScary time Boo had there and you too. If you should ever be in a fix like this again and I hope not, it's good to have a syringe without the needle on hand to push water through the side of his mouth, never straight down the throat. So happy he is all better now! I love black and white kitties, what am I saying, I love all kitties!
ReplyDeleteAwwww, poor kitty. I'm so glad he's doin' better but this is one chick who knows it can be a real battle to get a pill down a cat!!!
ReplyDeleteGod bless and I hope Kitty gets well!!!
Awwwwwww, poor kitty. Poor you too. I do know how hard it can be to get kitty to take a pill. I am so glad he is doing better.
ReplyDeleteDebbie
I know exactly what you mean. So glad Boo came through.
ReplyDeleteOh Jen, how frightening! I'm so glad he is feeling better!
ReplyDeleteI came her from Meredith's site, The Enchanted Garden. I started to read the post she mentioned and then saw this.
ReplyDeleteOh, I have been there and done that. It so hard with animals to explain that "You must take this pill." Cats are definitely the worst. Although we do not have pill pockets for cats. They're made by Greenies, but you still would have to crush the pill or else the cat the treat and leave the pill.
I have very, very old dog and we've made quite a few emergency visits and I always wonder if this one is the last, but she keeps on going, thank goodness.
I'm very happy that your cat has recovered:~)
so glad to hear it ended in a good way.
