“OK, why do we need these again?” He asked for the third time. I explain that finials are there as a decorative element on the curtain rods, and they also [jokingly] help stop the curtains from falling off the end. But who knows, I am certainly no expert, maybe they do.
“What are they called again?”
“Finials”
“Fin-e what's?”
“Finials.
Why?
“Um..., I don’t know. They just are, and so are the ones on the top of the lamp.”
“ Let’s move on to the paint for the cupboards, now do you prefer Cookie Dough, or Cloud white?” I ask.
“What do you mean, they both look the same to me, you choose.”
“Do you want to use the satin, or should we use the semi-gloss?”
He remarks something that sounds very much like, “this isn’t a wrench, and I am not interested in it.”
He’s a guy, a man, and male, you know, they really don’t love talking about paint colors, or decorating. But then to be fair, I don’t really love talking about oil changes, and battery levels, engine power, or rev’s per minute.
But I do try to make sure to find a solution that works for both of us.
It’s a far cry from when I grew up, my Dad worked, and my Mom worked the home.
So when the decorating spirit hit her, Dad would come home to a sunshine yellow kitchen, and I mean SUNSHINE YELLOW!
Good morning star shine.
It’s a good thing that their royal blue bedroom was across the house, it might have clashed wonderfully.
Although our bathroom was adorned with hot pink flowered wallpaper, like every other friend’s house. Remember the avocado green bathroom fixtures? Or the lavender?
I was so jealous of my sister’s lavender striped wallpapered room, with the pale purple walls, because mine was RED! Everywhere red, how on earth did she find a red polyester bedspread?
Oh what about the Burnt Orange craze of the seventies. My eyes are still smarting from that glare.
The wall to wall carpet that covered the floor, and halfway up the walls of our “Rec Room,” the one with the dark brown squares that deftly hid the giant wolf spiders.
Ah the good old days, and now thanks to all the decorating shows, we are fountains of good taste.
At least until the next generation declares our favourite colors to be old fashioned.

OMG! How true! I don't even have to ask mine, he just rolls his eyes. And goes along with whatever I ask. 8>)
ReplyDeleteG'morning Jen!
ReplyDeletehow I laughed with you on this post..
my hubs is a physician..
i am the creator of dreams around here..
meaning that I make them come true..
that's the planning and execution of the project..and everything in between the two from start to finish..
Yes.. how well do I remember the Avacado craze..
and the Burnt Orange.. shag carpet still makes me cringe..then the harvest gold..
but the best tolerated color of all was Almond..
I too was that lucky kid with the Lavender bedroom..
my sis detests the color because we shared a room and I always "asked" her to agree on the color!
warmest sandy hugs..

I have been chucking through your entire post! How true it is! You brought back some great memories of childhood...like having to rake the shag carpet and my bright yellow bedroom! It is a good thing we have better taste now :0)
ReplyDeleteMy husband leaves it to me although I do show him the paint colors and he has learned to comment or live with it...I do remember the burnt orange avocado and dull brownish yellow...I had a light yellow bedroom and my sister the hot pink...I hated cleaning those shag avocado carpets...
ReplyDeleteIf I had delved further into my memory I too would have recalled raking the advocado green carpet. Sigh, the good old days...

LOL! Those words sound so familiar Jen. It has to be a guy thing that most could care less about decorating.I had heard so many times, "I don't care, whatever". LOL!
ReplyDeleteMy grandparents had the green bath fixtures and we had the orange shag carpet! Oh, how things change!
ReplyDeleteThe painters keep calling out for me "Hey Lady!" John tells them to just check with the boss!
That is so funny Jen. Men they don't care what color the wall is. Yes I do remember the avacodo green or the burnt orange. The shag carpet in avacodo green - yuk. Can't believe we even liked that stuff then. Have a good day.
ReplyDeleteThat's cute. I don't think I could have slept in a red room. I'm blue, all the way.
ReplyDeleteThis rang a chord with me. We're busy trying to put curtains up!
ReplyDeleteCheers from S.E. Ontario Cottage Country!
If you are putting up curtains you must be nearing the end of the project! I have the hardest time picking out paint colors..we only have one room in the house that is painted..the upstairs bath..it is butter yellow and country blue..it took me three months to decide on the stupid color. ( The rest of the house is wood..knotty pine) I wish you good luck choosing paint colors..yes I have had avacado green shag carpet..yew..what were we thinking:(
ReplyDeleteI lived in a house like the one you describe! LOL!
ReplyDeleteWonderful sizzling flower shots.
This is funny and you bring back some good and not so good memories of color schemes.
ReplyDeleteLOL~Thank you Jen for the smiles!
ReplyDeleteSo this post... so true, so true!!
ReplyDeleteFunny as hell post. What's interesting in my house, is that my wife relies on me for color choices because of my gardening experience. It ends there decorating wise, but I like that I can contribute in at least one way.
ReplyDeleteVery funny post. I am ashamed to say my first house was adorned in 80's blue. I could not have enough blue with dark maroon accents.
ReplyDeleteToday I still have my dishes: Adams Lancaster with those maroon and blue flowers. They don't match a dang thing in the house.
Oh, I so enjoyed this post, Jen! Since my husband and I began renos last month, I've watched his eys glaze over during my discussion of why Urban Khaki was a better paint colour choice than Obelisk...and he seems determined to endlessly repeat the names and uses of every type of screwdriver, though I'm fine calling them the straight head and the square head! No wonder men and women don't get each other!
ReplyDeleteThanks for providing the chuckle of the day...:)
