Weather is a great metaphor for life - sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad, and there's nothing much you can do about it but carry an umbrella. ~Terri Guillemets
Weather or not?
According to a few people interviewed on the local news the other night, we are having a terrible summer here on the West Coast. A horrific, catastrophic out of proportion to the season kind of wind, and rain, and nightmare summer.
“Oh really?”
People, it’s just a bit of rain!
There are no floods here, no houses floating through towns as they are carried away from weeping families who have finally reached safe ground only to see their life swept away. That’s happening somewhere else. Consider yourself blessed that all you need to deal with is a little rain.
There are no drought parched fields, with dusty, cough causing, get in your very pores dirt that coats everything. Someone else is dealing with that right now.
Normal, or not
This is just a almost normal West Coast summer. Yes, we had a bit of rain yesterday, we really have not had that much. Sure we have had some gloomy days, some even cool days. And yes, I know it’s summer, the time we wait all wet winter for, but it’s simply just a bit of rain…consider yourself blessed that’s all it is.
Be thankful, or else!
And in between there are beautiful, warm sunny days that should be even more special to us. And if you don’t appreciate them, I am sure there are people suffering through heat, and flooding that would be more then happy to trade if they could.
This is my opinion, so sorry if you don’t agree, but frankly, I am tired of the complaining done by all of us. This is what it is, make the most of it. Life is like the weather, see the quote above….
Jen @ Muddy Boot Dreams
I totally agree! Just look at the pictures of poor starving people in East Africa, which has been suffering the worst drought ever!
ReplyDeleteI always try to be thankful for rain - it's a scarce commodity around the world.
Wonderful sentiments...when we were being flooded this spring with the huge snow melt and all the rain I complained because I could not garden for a couple of months and it was cold so plants were delayed...I predicted that we would get a dry, hot summer and we have so far...no complaining ...just accepting that some things are not growing or growing and fading fast...it is what it is and it could always be much worse...we just have to adapt!
ReplyDeletePeople are never happy with the weather, it's either too hot, too cold, too wet, too dry. People complain and complain but does the weather listen ... NO. So it's time to accept it and get on with it. We are in a drought, but the good thing is we don't have to cut the grass. Yep, it's hot, but there are lots of ways to cool down.
ReplyDeleteJen, I am with you!
ReplyDelete'There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes'...
Jen, what you’ve said is so profoundly true. So many people complain about the rain yet it is SO needed and appreciated by all the living things in green SW BC. Although it seems extreme to some, it fortunately really isn’t when compared to how it has poured (or not poured) in other parts of the globe. Even after a heavy rainfall I notice the ground is soon parched and in need of more water … from heaven or the hose. Love your photograph of rain. The drops glow like gems on the leaf. :)
ReplyDeleteHi Jen, So nice to meet you! Love your photos, and the name of your blog. Thanks so much for popping by and leaving a comment. We had some rain yesterday and it was wonderful, brought a little cooler air with it. Have a super weekend!!
ReplyDeleteI'm chuckling, Jen, because I am often one of the complainers and your words are so true. We're not really suffering just because we're having a wet-tish summer. It could be SO much worse. Thank you for reminding us of this. Beautiful photos!
ReplyDeleteWell we do live in a rainforest don't we. I have to point out though Jen that you are south and though you may be seeing a little rain those of us north of the river are seeing nonstop rain day after day.
ReplyDeleteIs it catastrophic? No, not even close, but the river is rising and there could be flooding. Not the house moving type but damaging to the homes and farms along the river just the same.
Plus this is July. I don't complain about the rain from mid October to May and even June but I draw the line at daily rain in July. Hopefully not in August too. The mold spores emanating up from the sodden ground are making many people very ill due to their allergies. Sinus infections are rampant. Way worse than tree pollen and grass allergies the experts say.
That being said...I don't even own an umbrella. The rain doesn't stop me from doing anything I want to do in life other than entertaining on my deck. My guests don't like sitting in the rain and it REALLY waters down my wine in my glass!
So true! This really puts things in perspective.
ReplyDeleteJen girl I haven't been around any blogs in so long I am surprised anyone will visit me to tell you the truth !! haha .. So thanks you for dropping by girl : ) I appreciate it!
ReplyDeleteI just scrolled through some of your posts and I so love your pictures .. I want to take pictures like those some day too ! .. I love that little deutzia : ) and it most likely knew you would be the one to love it up and take it home*smile*
The weather .. like Linda said no one is ever happy with it eh ?
I was out at 6 AM this morning to do a deep water of my gardens .. it takes over 3 hours to do it right .. and this morning it was 3.5 hours .. so I crawled indoors .. drank a lot of liquids .. had a shower and I want to fall on my bed now ;-) I'm beat but by golly the gardens are well watered for a while!! .. So is Boo a total indoor cat now ? and the visitor is being discouraged .. hard to do but a must, right ? I know you have a BIG heart girl .. but stick to your guns .. you have bigger fish to fry! haha

You hit the nail on the head! I am a weather complainer and I have to keep reminding myself that others in this world are far worse off. Thanks for sharing from your heart today. Blessings, Pamela
ReplyDeleteI've definitely been one of the whiners. I think it's just the lack of seeing the sun that gets me. But as I've seen the weather related problems other parts of the world have been having, it has reminded me that we've been pretty lucky here. Today the sun came out and it was actually warm, a little sprinkle of rain came and it was quite refreshing!
ReplyDeleteWell said.
ReplyDeleteYou remind me of... myself! Always looking for the bright side. It sees us through the stormy days, doesn't it?! I needed the reminder. Thanks Jen.
ReplyDeleteWell it is still too hot here..I am still complaining..not that it will do any good:(
ReplyDeleteJen, I chuckled a bit. Vancouverites really get tired of the rain. I remember being stopped downtown once in January by a news reporter. Asking what I thought of the outrageous amounts of rain we were receiving. I couldn't believe my ears - lady it's winter in Vancouver, of course it's raining!
ReplyDeleteWe've got a similar problem with the local news telling us how unseasonable cool our summer is this year. Like you, I don't understand what all the fuss is about considering the havoc Mother Nature is wreaking on other regions. We've still had days that are over 37C (100F--triple digit days is what they're called). So to me it isn't that much of shift from normal. I think they're just trying to create news wherever they can.

I'm with you on this, Jen! We're so incredibly lucky to live where we do, free from the horrors of extreme weather that plague other places. The rain keeps everything lush and lovely here, all year round.
ReplyDeleteAnd I like to think that raincoast dampness helps keep our skin youthful and dewy, too...LOL.
