Strawberry Sandwiches

untitled shoot-1006

I have this vivid, and very tasty childhood memory of warm summer days, juicy strawberries lightly sprinkled with sugar, layered in rows on fresh baked bread.

Turns out so does my husband.

Both of us being of Dutch descent means that some of our family traditions are alike.  But we part ways at the amount of sugar used on this delectable sandwich.

He insisted that the very best Strawberry sandwich have mashed berries, and no sugar.  What? I exclaim, why that’s, that’s almost inhuman.  Of course it should be lightly sprinkled with sugar, how else can you prove that you are Dutch if you don’t put sugar on almost everything?

I can almost taste it again the fresh, unsliced loaf of white bread, still warm from the bakery, siblings squabbling over who got the crust.  Juicy sliced berries, and the light sprinkling of sugar to top it all off.

His version with it’s runny mashed berries, and no sugar, just doesn’t have the same appeal to me.  My version makes him shudder, and remember how his Mom poured the sugar onto almost everything.

Have you heard of strawberry sandwiches? Have you ever had one?

And if not, when are you going to try one?

Today I compromised, homemade scones, whipping cream, and mashed strawberries.

Made with almost no sugar, sigh, there goes the Dutch in me……

  1. Oh MY! that looks heavenly! Yummmo! I'd go the sugar route as well, and I am not Dutch.

  2. Just tell him it is "unlawful" not to use the sugar!!!!! I've never had either version, but boy does it sound good. I did have a waffle yesterday with glazed strawberries and whipped cream!

  3. I have never had a strawberry sandwich. I guess that is what jam is, just with lots and lots of sugar.
Your scones look so tender and yummy.

  4. Mmm. Those look good. Just occurred to me that the beloved shortcake recipe from Mr. Sorry's grandma is very much like a scone. Just the right amount of not-sweet to go with berries.

  6. Well you really know how to get those old taste buds going. LOL! I am slobbering all over this posting.
We make Strawberry Shortcake that way here. Biscuit dough baked and then layered with sliced strawberries add some whipped creme and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Yummy.
Great now I will have to buy strawberries Jen. LOL!

  7. I've never heard of strawberry sandwiches, or on scones for that matter! But I'm thinking it's not a bad idea, especially since the neighbours are bugging me to participate in the annual strawberry social. I've never put strawberries with anything other than whipped cream before.

  9. That does look yummy! When my kids were growing up, we ate a lot of spaghetti and garlic toast. We always saves some of the garlic toast to eat with strawberry jam! It's a good combination...really! heehee! ♥

  10. Oh, my that looks tasty! My mom made very similar biscuits for our strawberry shortcake, except that we poured "half & half" cream over the top. So tasty!

  12. No, not strawberry sandwiches. But I do remember my dad's home grown strawberries and my mom's short cake made out of Bisquick. Lots of sugar and cold milk. Thanks for inspiring that old memory.

  17. It must be true, that opposites attract! ;) I never had a strawberry sandwich per se. I think yours sound better, but looking at the photographs they so remind me of my own childhood. Scones, with strawberry jam, and clotted Devon cream! Oh dear, I'm having an attack of nostalgia, and the hungries!
