It’s not easy to see weevils, and slugs practically eat your garden alive in front of your eyes. But if you have made the decision to be more green, and use only organic pesticides there are alternatives you can use.
Don’t waste your expensive, locally made, sustainable, micro brewed beer on those slimy slugs. It’s the yeast they want. Just mix 1 teaspoon of yeast, and 1 teaspoon of sugar, in 1 cup of water, place in upturned lids of jars, and watch the slug fest happen. Sit back and drink your specialty beer, sitting in your lawn chair, besides you will appreciate it much more then those swilling snails.
Nematodes, are extremely helpful to control black weevils. Microscopic living creatures, they are usually applied during the cooler months of spring, they can still be used in mid to late September if the temps are cool enough. Check with your local nursery. Mixed with water the creepy swimming [you can’t see anything, don’t go all squeamish on me here,] creatures are poured over the soil in the infested areas and steadily go to work. They will burrow into the larvae of the weevils and destroy them.
I found that only one simple application cured my weevil problem for a few seasons, which is good, because they are not that cheap.
Ants are not supposed to like mint, still not sure how well that one works, since they liked to carry the crushed leaves away on my patio. But Borax and icing sugar mixed together and put into places where only ants, not your children, or pets can find it works well.
Touring the garden with a flashlight, and a pail of salty water at night, is more then a good way to get splashed, it also lets you pick off insects and drop them into the water to perish.
See gardening can be fun, so happy hunting.
Or if you are like me, then UMMmmmmmmmm happy Zen.

Thanks for the tips Jen! Happy hunting.
ReplyDeleteYou are full of useful information...love the slug solution and the fact that no longer, must the beer be shared except to batter my fresh caught fish.

You have some really good ideas. What about grasshoppers?
ReplyDeleteLovely pics! I tend to let the slugs eat their fill...
ReplyDeleteTea leaves and garlic (not necessarily together) in the soil keeps a few bugs away, as well. I just can't remember which ones...I usually get an aphid infestation, so may those...? Which reminds me...no aphids this year! *happy dancing*
ReplyDeleteLovely photos Jen! I especially love blue hydrangeas. Interesting post. My "desert" gardening seems so different. I will have to learn all over again if we move to a wetter climate! Have a great week.
ReplyDeleteI remember having a garden and trying to do everything organic! It was a lot to keep up with every little bug...or slug! But it was worth it! enjoy your day! ♥
ReplyDeleteThanks for the gardening tips and gorgeous photos- but tell me please...what the heck is a Weevil? I´m thinking Whoville here but guessing I´m extremely off base here...hahahahaha....
ReplyDeleteJen girl I too am terrible at visiting (Spent most of Friday afternoon in Emergency .. husband very sick with ear infection .. long story) but I wanted to say YES ! I too make a fine gardener when running away from bugs .. but I also use no chemicals so it takes some fine tuning to try and control those nasty critters .. I also am very interested in that camera lens .. I want to get as much information for a good set up after I finish blowing money on my garden office computer stuff when sone finally moves out .. can you say Christmas present ??? LOL

Well, I learned something new yet again. I love the yeast trick much better than putting out beer (which I cannot stand the smell of anyway). Very cool indeed!

I gave up this year trying to control slugs in a wet spring garden...with the drought they left on their own...the Japanese beetles were so numerous and I had such precious little time, they made the garden look even more haggard...well what can you do...I sit back and enjoy!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful post.... Nice pics too
ReplyDeleteGood tips, nice to know I don't have to share my beer with the slugs anymore, whew!
ReplyDeleteHi...I finally found someone that feeds the slugs beer or yeast/sugar. When I tell people, they look at me like I am crazy. Been there after dark looking for slugs too with a flashlight. They ate my marigolds last year ..I thought bugs/insects did not like marigolds. Planted marigolds in the same spot this year and no problem with slugs.
ReplyDeleteWe plant a garden that is 50 ft. long and 30 ft wide and I always plant marigolds around it. We have had this garden 4 years and I have never used a pesticide. We live in South GA. and the garden is near a farmers field...don't know if that why; I am sure he sprays for insects.
Have a great day.
Smiles,
Maxie
Lovely color and thanks for gardening tips!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great post..how to kill stuff organically! I wish you were the corporate farmer that farms next to us..or maybe his wife. I shudder to think of all the chemicals:(
