If you can’t find the ocean, make your own waves

1-Ventures-1015

My longing to visit the ocean is strong

but it’s over 5 hours away, and that trip

isn’t going to happen for awhile.  I knew

that I needed to visit some where there

was lots of water.

The North Okanagan is

made up of some of the

most stunning lakes in

Canada.

Problem solved. Day trip!

We went to Ellison Provincial park, which is on Okanagan lake,  the views are stunning, the water is beautiful, and the chipmunks ran wild between the trees.

The waves lapped at the shoreline of red volcanic rock, and the craggy trees reached for the sky tinted so blue it looked unreal.

And just so you can picture how big Okanagan Lake is, it runs from Vernon, to Penticton.

That’s a one hour and 47 minute drive, or about 115 kms.  A very long way….what a lake.

So if you can’t find your ocean, choose the next best thing, a lake. And make it do for now.

  2. Actually, Jen, your shots of the lake remind me very much of the West Coast. I like your idea of finding the ocean wherever you can. This substitute looks as intriguing as the original. It has been a while since I visited Okanagan Lake so it was good to see it again through your eyes.

  3. I grew up on Lake Ontario and although I have seen and loved the ocean, a lake is more beautiful and calming to me. There is gorgeous scenery in BC!

  5. Very nice Jen. We do have to give up some things in order to gain others..finding that balance can be a challenge... :)

  7. Stunning scenery. You may just fine a new favorite. The longing for the old often inspires us to find the new in life and thus we grow a bit more, add another layer to who we are. Beautiful photos.

  8. Looking at any water is a treat and provides an escape. I am totally unfamiliar with the area you went to, but it is just beautiful. Ann

  10. I've been thinking the same thing for when I'm up and around. Water, I just need to see some water! You've got some great scenery right there.

  11. I didn't know about this park...and now it seems it may be too late for me to enjoy it. Lake Okanagan has always been one of my favourites. Did you know that there is a whole string of lakes that connect and Okanagan is only one in the series?

  12. WOW! BIG lake! That must almost seem like the ocean! Of course we have big Lake Michigan. But not as pretty as your lake. But when you are in need of being by the water the lakes will fill in nicely! Plus I am in Wisconsin and would have to travel for a long time to get to the ocean. Once there though you never forget the pull of the ocean. Don't get me wrong I love our lakes. Some are beautiful...but.

  15. WOW! That is a gorgeous lake and you got some wonderful photos. I'm sure the weather was nice for an outing, too. I'm glad you enjoyed a day trip to the lake. Did you get your feet wet?

  16. I know what you mean about missing the ocean. I missed it horribly when I left Vancouver a very long time ago:) IMHO lakes are not a substitute for the Pacific but going to one makes an acceptable day trip and way to cool down. Did you visit any wineries?

  18. What a beautiful blog! I grew up dreaming of an ocean I didn't see until I was an adult. Even the closest lake was a bit of a drive, so my water "fix" had to be satisfied by the lovely river that ran through the town. After that, ten years living by a lake were like heaven, but still the ocean called. Five years by the Atlantic and now the last fourteen by the Pacific, and I have learned what you express so beautifully in these posts. The waterways and natural beauties around us stay in our hearts and become part of the way we appreciate nature and humanity. You have taken all that you have known and turned it into a gift that you share beautifully with people from around the world.

  19. What a beautiful "second" - compared to our lakes here, that truly is an "ocean." ;o And the beach in that last photo definitely could pass for an ocean beach! You're actually making me want to see the Okanagan for myself.... Smiles & Hugs ~ Robin

  22. We were at Ellison two years ago just after Thanksgiving. We just about had the place to ourselves. They have an awesome dog beach just round the bay from the beach you were at I think. We spent a lot of time there with our three.
