A captive summer

“Next year, no gardens,” he say’s.

It’s with the utmost concern in his

voice, it’s a suggestion, because he

is overly worried about me.

I’ve spent a good part of

our first summer up here as a indoor

captive but it’s not really any different

then any other summer in the last few

years.

Does summer make it hard for

you

to go outside also?

Something out there at times makes it hard for me to be outside, a rash all over, vertigo, and other assorted allergy symptoms have combined to make this a summer season not to be enjoyed.   I am hoping that the rain not yet forecasted will help with my allergies.

Add in excessive heat, the kind that blasts through the door as you open it, and summer up here is best enjoyed from behind the window.

But it seems that the hot spell is finally over, we have had a few cool nights, and a lovely cooler day, what a relief.  Although many of the temperatures will still easily reach 30C here, the cooler nights, and mornings will make me shiver as I drag that hose around the garden.

As much as I love summer, I am looking forward to turning on the oven, baking deserts, breads, casseroles, and anything roasted again.  Salads are wonderful, but too much of a good thing can be just too much.  The squash shall be ready, and the apple crop will be harvested soon, I can’t wait.

What part of the cooling down of summer is the most pleasing to you?

  1. I love sitting in the sun on fall days, when the sun's warmth is just perfect.

  2. I think the part I love most about Fall is the weather is still nice but the evenings are cool enough to light a fire,

  3. I'm so sorry your allergies have taken over yourfirst summer in your new home but I have to say I agree in part with your husband, there is no point in torturing yourself, I know , I have been in this position, the constant problems of allergies can have long lasting effects, I have asthma now from uncontrolled allergies, I have nerve damage from severe rashes, its not worth it in the end, I surely don't mean to sound like a downer but this is truly something I understand, I hope today is a good day, one thing I know for sure nothing is worth vertigo, thats the nastiest of nasty!I give two comments for the price of one today, ha ha , I hit the button too soon!! Sorry for my long windedness ,

  4. I like the long shadows in the morning and evening this time of year. Yes, they are probably there all the time, but something about the shadows, the angle of the sun, and the faint aroma of drying vegetation are appealing to me. I look forward to wearing a sweater and wool socks in the mornings and evenings. Since it has been such a long summer, I am looking forward to Autumn: I just hope it stays here a while.

  5. Spring was very hard for me, allergies were really bad, found out I am extremely allergic to Wisteria. There is one growing by the side of the house. The owners said they are cutting it down, I hope before next spring or we will have to move. My eyes were swollen shut some days when I made it outside. Right now I am enjoying the coole nights for sleeping. Sorry you are dealing with this when you wanted so much to have a nice garden and such. Perhaps if it is not too expensive, put in soaker hoses in the garden beds if possible or have the garden on a smaller scale. Try Bell's allergies capsules. They work for me so far, also Queritin. Take that every day along with vitamin C. Hope that helps, they are just suggestions as they are helping me at the moment.

  6. I, too, welcome the cooling of the weather, as these last few weeks of summer have been quite hot. This is what I love about our areas … the changing seasons. There is always something one has had enough of and something new to look forward to around the corner. :)

  7. I empaythize~allergies are miserable. Our Grandlove struggles with them.
As for me, I love the fall colors in our heavily Maple laden forest. And there is something about walking in wet fallen leaves, the scent is a true reminder that fall is under foot.
Hope you're feeling better. Being outside always makes me breathe easier.

  8. I love when it starts to cool down and I can really enjoy our outdoor spaces. The humidity makes me crazy in the summer. Fall and Spring are my best times, well unless stuff is blooming and then I'm sneezing. Maybe I can't win.

  9. The ONLY think I like about the cooling temperatures is the opportunity to bring my dog along with me on car rides, instead of leaving her alone in her crate.

Funny...just last night, I was thinking of asking you if you've ever considered pursing a career in landscape architecture. I think you'd be a natural.

  11. Hi Jen, I know what you mean. My allergies go a bit haywire in the summer. Today, as a matter of fact, I have a big old sinus headache from them. Hope you feel better soon.

  14. any idea if there is a particular plant that hates you? That you could remove from your own space at least?
30c is fine, comfortably warm, but when the temperature moves to 40C and stays hot at night ... We still have snow dusting our mountains ;~)

  15. I hope you get my comments, Jen, because now that I am back at work I will be posting at the end of the day. I love the way you photograph the sunflowers. For me, I like either the early morning and just before sundown when the day begins to cool off. It has been hot this summer. I thought this morning as I was getting ready for work what I did all summer--I stayed in because it was just do hot. Not a good way to spend summer days.

Fall must be a delight for you.

  17. I will be done with work for the winter on September 29...then Fall can begin!! I am going to sleep late and wear my jammies all day for a couple of days!
I think you should see an allergy specialist..sounds to me like you need allergy shots.
You better be keeping that health diary:)

  18. I can relate to your dilemma of being inside most of the summer. I've had to adopt that mode of operation. Summer is my season to hibernate indoors. Spring and fall are the seasons when I can go out in the garden and thoroughly enjoy it. It used to be just the intense summer sun (I have very fair skin) but now it's also allergies. It's funny... the other evening Hubby and I were getting excited about the plans we have for projects in the back garden once the seasons change. Yes, I can definitely relate to you plight, Jen.

  19. My son's allergies are so bad in spring that his eyes can swell closed after playing outside. But out of sight, out of mind, so we forgot about allergies over summer. Then this week they cut the fields next door and he came in from playing basketball in the backyard with his eyes swollen shut. Oh, that's right. You have allergies. Blech!

  21. I too spend much of my summer inside in the a/c because of allergies. Unfortunately I am allergic to mold, so Autumn isn't any better. On the bright side, I am really looking forward to cooler days.

  22. It's that feel in the air that I look forward to. Coolness that tells me that fall is on it's way..
