Colourfully confused

5-Paint chips-1811

The odd thing about interior design

is that I love it, but I have no great

urge to make spectacular changes

to our house every few months.

And I know that there are people who

can, and do this all the time.

“I just wonder where

they get the energy,

the inspiration, and the

absolute knowledge that

you made the right

choice.”

We have to make some changes when the weather cools, because it’s time to get rid of the dark denim blue hallway, and the lavender living room.  Oh and the flesh eating pink bathroom walls, they are going out the door.

Soon, just as soon as we can pick some colors.

Right, I know you’ve heard me say this before, but this time it’s true.

2-Paint chips-1805

Seriously, I’ve even gone out and picked color chips, and if that’s not a lesson in frustration, what is.

Did you know that there are 16.78 million colors of cream? Bisque, beige, cream, cottage white, flower white, sea salt, oatmeal, clotted cream, all this talk of color is making me hungry.

And then there is the “greige’s”, the grey/beige combo that is all the rage, did you even know that colors can be all the rage?

Oh and don’t forget the new upcoming color trends for 2013, whew, how much more creams do I need?

Apparently 12.780 million choices.

Sure I am exaggerating, there are only about, oh a million cream tones to choose from, and some will be the “it” cream color for next year, and some will be has beens….oh the pressure.

I just want a color that we can live with, a open arms, come on in and put your feet up kind of warm light reflecting color.  One of those I feel so at home with this choice that is going to cost around $100 per room in paint alone, kind of color.

We have a lot of rooms to paint and I want to make sure we pick the right colors.  After all if I make the wrong choice, I am going to have to live with it for a long time.  Right now the contenders are all hanging onto the wall with double sided tape, some falling by the wayside as the tape comes undone.  Maybe that’s how I should choose, the one left hanging is “THE COLOR.”

Survival of the fittest, in color chips.

  1. Good Morning, Jen! Painting is hard work but the end results are so rewarding. You might enjoy blogger Amy's recent post about "chipping."

  2. :)
Yep. We picked up a can of white, to go with the white we already had...nope it had a gray tint to it...so white isn't even white anymore....sigh

  3. I feel your 'paint' I've got drawers full of color chips too. I'm looking at changing some of my deep colors to more neutrals. Any choice you make will be fresh and clean - so just dive in!

  4. Survival of the fittest!!! I'm just like you, took me a year to choose color schemes for our cottage, I have the Kitchen and living room painted. I like the way it has turned out, because this is what we're going to live with for a very long time. This spring we will tackle the hallway, laundry room and main bathroom. Slow progress but that's OK.

  5. Choosing paint color is so darn hard. Looks good on the chip, but then it goes on the wall. I have painted two bathrooms in two houses, both the wrong color. And it seems that both times I picked the same color--my eye seems drawn to same color thinking that it is a warm tone beige that once it goes on the wall it is peachy. ick. But I am living with it until the next time to paint. ick. I didn't want peach. Some paint brands offer test jars of paint that you can try on. Expensive, so I haven't used them. Good luck.

  6. Picking out colors can be so overwhelming. We just had some painting done and so far I like what I chose, but it could change next week! Have a great day, Jean

  7. I feel your pain and all I'm trying to do is choose a slighty off white/not yellow-orange base/ satin paint color for some furniture. I do not envy you choosing wall colors- at all..
I finally choose khaki for my walls 3 years ago and I keep a gallon on hand at all time :)
I really like the chips you've chosen..

may I ask where I could find a birds nest and eggs like you have in your photo.. thank you

  8. Although it is an expense I never worry about the "wrong" paint color. If it is horrible in the end, if I just can't live with it (yes it has happened) I repaint.
Another room would just have to wait a little longer when money permits.
In the long run it is just paint and not a tattoo.

  9. Looks like you have some pretty colors there. I like to paint. The walls in the house we are renting are all white. Not sure how much painting I will do here since it's only temporary. Can't wait to see what you choose.

  10. The photos are absolutely gorgeous! How on earth can paint chips look so pretty. :-)

ANYway, don't forget 'biscotti.' I believe our living room is painted in 'biscotti,' but then that is SO YESTERDAY. lol

  11. I'm sure it will all turn out beautifully. You have such a good idea for colors and themes Jen. Do share some before and afters, ok!

  12. Oh you are going to have fun in choosing the right color. I love painting walls as well as canvases,. You know I almost went to college in my late teens to study Interior Design. My first love is decorating. Just take your time, stick to your instincts and go for it. I tend to go for what is not instyle or color. Have fun!

  13. Forget paint chips. Buy a sample jar of paint and slap it on your wall. Then, see how the colour changes in different light throughout the day. Be prepared to try lots of different colours before you hit on the "perfect" one. Don't forget the cardinal rule: It's only paint.

  14. This is one of the hardest things for me to do! You do NOT want to know how long my bathroom has been 'unpainted'! I took the ugly wallpaper down and it looked so much better that it didn't bother me any more. I wanted to paint it dark blue...now I'm thinking pale blue! I better wait! heeheehee!

  15. I was so grateful when they started selling tester sized containers for a few bucks of any color I wanted mixed. It saved me a great deal of heartache with our living room. The tester paint went really far and painted an entire wall. Because I used to work for an interior designer, I took her advice and sat with it for over 24 hours and looked at it in all different lights and different times of the day. I'm SO glad I did. It looked fine during the day but at night it was horrible!!!! I learned to always paint the color as a test before taking the plunge into buying a whole big can.

  16. I can't imagine having to pick a color for a room. I have lived in apartments my whole adult life. I guess you know what color that means :)

  17. I find picking colours such a challenge too and I often wonder who picks the names for these colours. I have seen aubergine, nectarine, but never clotted cream, what a hoot, sounds more like dinner to me!

  18. I really like the colors in your pictures. They're fresh, light and won't way the house down in heavy dark colors. Ooooo, imagine that robin blue in one of your rooms. I love painting....I'm great at color design:) But yes....the paint can add up quickly:)

  19. I am terrible at trying to choose. Why do there have to have to be so many choices? In the end, though a neutral shade will reflect the light and I am sure make you happy. Good luck :)
