Neighbourhood watch

Flowers-0037

Our little country subdivision is a

real hummer during these

cooler summer evenings. It’s

neighbourhood watch time, in

summer during the heat wave there

were very few dog walkers out in the

day, but  now that it’s cooled down

somewhat it’s a real parade of dogs

kids, people, and more dogs.

Do you pick up after pooch?

You do not want a reputation here for

not picking up after your pooch, it sticks

and never goes away.  I have had each dog owner that hasn’t picked up after their dog, pointed out

to me by well meaning neighbours.  Your reputation depends on if you pick up, and how your dog

behaves.

“That one left some behind one morning at 6 am, and he thought I never noticed” she will point to a unsuspecting neighbour, who regularly picks up his pooches' deposits whenever I see him.  But apparently it’s one strike you are out around here, and my neighbour never forgets, or forgives.

“He stopped, looked around, pulled out the plastic bag, and just walked away.”  Now I watch for him every morning she tells me.  What she would do if he was caught in the act I have no idea, but he is smeared ahem, for life.

Yappy dog is going for a walk, I point out the teeny dog to my husband, it lives across the street, and the owner will stand and talk to neighbours and let the dog bark without stopping, it’s shrill bark penetrating our houses walls, and windows.

Our front window is large and we can see much of the street, and many evenings we sit and watch the poopy parade out front.  Boo our cat, is fascinated by all the commotion as dog meets dog, tails wag, and people brag.

We know the dogs by sight better then we know the neighbours, huge dogs, walking neatly beside small little dogs, mid sized dogs walked by friends that meet and greet each day.

There is even a couple that regularly walk many of their neighbouring dogs, at first I didn’t know, and had lost count of how many dogs I thought they must have had.  Because each time I saw them, they had different dogs on the leash.

It seems neighbourhood watch has gone to the dogs.  How is yours for picking up?

  1. We have a lot of dogs walking by across the street as that is where the sidewalk is located. I have discovered dog poop on the front lawn, much to my dismay. No idea who could do such a thing. I used to see by an apartment building in Vancouver's West End, a miniature sign staked into their lawn, by a pile of poop, "Good dog", "Bad owner".

  2. Oh! At first I was wondering if your neighbours would mind you mentioning them in this way. Then I thought they would be knocking on your door, ready to forgive anything if only they could be given a portrait of their dog - but they aren't their dogs! Oh!

Maddening where I live. The sun shines on the left debris dogs leave. You breath in to smell the sea air . . . the flowers . . . and get . .. er . . .

I think most people round here pick up after their dogs but there are so many dogs, the few owners who are remiss in this have a disproportionate impact on what's underfoot and in the atmosphere.

  3. Not alot of walkers here.....maybe it is too hilly.
We have a lady in a motorized wheel chair that goes around our neighborhood with her Goldendoodle. He lifted his leg on my pachysandria (sorry that sp. can't be right) and killed it. I didn't see him do it but know it was him. I was not happy.
Years ago I found a bag of dog poop hanging on my mailbox. We had a cocker spaniel then that we never let loose. Close by their was another cocker the same color that we would sometimes see loose. I am sure know the neighbor that did this. Very very rude, esp. when it wasn't our dog. Doesn't that take nerve.
    I pick up after mine.

  4. We have a neighbor two doors down from us whose two dogs run loose throughout the neighborhood. That is maddening! They, of course, leave their deposits wherever they like. The dogs followed me one day while I was trying to take a walk, out onto a busy street, where they just ran willy-nilly out into the road. They didn't get hit, but I actually had to turn back to get them back into our neighborhood. It is so frustrating to be trying to take a walk, and encounter loose dogs. It's put me off walking as exercise.

  5. oh dear.. in NYC, people would come down the street like a bat out of hell if you didn't pick up after the pooch.

I've had on occasion people screaming at me if the dog is peeing and i don't seem to be making an effort to clean it up! lol.

  6. We live near the entrance to our subdivision of about 80 homes. With a few exceptions, folks pick up after their dogs. Little Harriet does not/will not go for a walk so she is not a problem!
LIke Boo, our cats sit in the garage (screened in) windows and just glare at the doggies passing by!
If your hubby likes old car, I have a beauty on my blog today....
You and I could drive through the country like Thelma and Louise!!!

  7. That is too funny about the whole 'poopy parade' that goes by each day! We don't have a lot of dog walkers here where I am being a dead-end road, and I think most of the neighbors have cats.

  8. Oh boy, you've opened quite a can of worms with this topic. It's rife with controversy around here, as well. I trained our pup from day one, not to venture outside the boundaries of our backyard, without us, partly to make sure she didn't get hurt or lost and also so I would know, without a shadow of a doubt, that she didn't soil on anyone else's property.

I am a pooper scooper, even in my own backyard. My mom and my neighbours...not so much.

One thing's for sure, if you do pick up after your dog, you get to know it on sight, and you also know when it's NOT your dog's business.

I'm sure there's a book in this somewhere.

  9. Ohhhhhh!!!! First love your puppy shots. Beautiful. But now about those idiot owners who DON'T pick up!!!

Okay gardener friend. Don't you get angry when you find a fresh pile after you've cleaned up your landscaping? We had a homeowner who let their dogs $%#@ everywhere. I stopped picking it up and let the homeowners get angry. I also put Cajun pepper in those areas to keep the dogs out. I get so angry when that happens. I'm with your neighbor.....I'd be watching and then reporting:) You should train Boo to track them with a collar camera:) Then report those owners to the HOA:) Have a great 3 day weekend!

  10. Awww, cute doggie photos. How funny that your neighbors pointed out the owners that don't pick up. I haven't noticed much of a problem here because of our laws requiring pick-up. I remember years ago, though, when the neighbors would let their dog "go" in our yard and they didn't pick it up. Frustrating.

  11. We do have a problem with people not picking up after their dogs. I think it is just laziness.
