It’s a odd feeling to have
pumpkins, and squash outside
our front door and not having
to worry about them rotting
away, like we would on the coast.
October used to be one big orange
blur of pumpkins rolling in and out
of the doors at the garden center.
Lug em out, bring em in!
Every morning, and night.
Hundreds of pumpkins
went through our doors
each day.
We all loved October, crisp days, falling leaves, mustering up all the shrubs, carting them off into the greenhouses for the winter. Fall decorating for Thanksgiving.
And the best part was the arrival of the pumpkins, it was tricky timing, they only lasted a certain length of time because it was too warm and too wet on the coast. Pumpkins left outside in the rain too long rotted, or were smashed by teenaged vandals at night.
So our October routine was rolling the huge, and heavy 6 foot square metal carts of pumpkins out the front door each morning, placing them in creative ways among the hay bales and antique wagons.
At the end of the day we were hurrying around in the dark to find all the orange globes, piling them back on the pumpkin carts. Pushing those heavy carts up the incline to the front door that always threatened to send us back into the parking lot. They wanted to leave them out as long as possible, which meant rushing around to get them all inside before we left.
It’s much easier up here in the Okanagan, we have a front porch where they all stay nice and dry, no more taking them in and out, which makes me very happy.
I have been working on getting my blog to reflect the colors of Autumn, but each time I get started on a new header something comes up, or I change my mind about the color scheme. I really love those soft summer colors, and I would like to keep them for just a little longer….so a change is in the air, not just in our upcoming weather, but on here also. Just let me linger a little while longer in our summer like weather.
Lingering……Jen @ Muddy Boot Dreams
I have yet to put out anything remotely resembling a pumpkin! I don't know why - I seem to be not very motivated this year. Love yours, Jen.

What an unique idea to partner pine cones and branches with the pumpkins. I like the way it looks. Happy Fall!!

I love seeing the pumpkins in the stores. I don't usually buy them as they are always too big. When we first moved to the island, we lived in a cul de sac, full of neighbouring kids. Naturally I had to buy some then for Halloween. No desire fr pumpkins as we live on a street filled with retirees. Great shots posted today.
ReplyDeletewell I certainly admire your spirit to lug those babies in and out everyday, I'm not sure I would have the desire to do that!! I will admit we have never bought a pumpkin in our lives, we always grew them and now our relatives still do so one or two is all we ever have, and its always cooked after the big day,

ReplyDeleteWe live in the south on the coast so fall is not the same as your northern change. We are no less enthusiastic however in our decorating. Mine is done! Pumpkins, pinecones, mums, gourds, hay bales and wreaths extend a warm rustic autumn welcome. We are too remote for trick or treaters. In this day and age there will be many community events for children on Halloween. The first of the festivals is this afternoon. Happy weekend.
ReplyDeleteI try every year to have pumpkins but the squirrels always get to them and make pumpkin pie out of them! I do buy a lot for indoors, the cute little ones.
ReplyDeleteYour pictures are so pretty, they would be perfect in a new header!
Happy Weekend!
XO,
Jane
I love your pumpkin and gourd displays with the pine and cones. Hauling those pumpkins around must have been hard and annoying work! I do like your summer header as the colours are so soft and pretty. I can't always decide on header pics so this time I opted for the single photo. :)
ReplyDeleteI loved looking at your fall colors and the compositions you put together for the photos. Brilliant job!
ReplyDeleteWe are moving in just a few weeks. I doubt I will do any autumn decorating this year. I'm glad I got to enjoy yours.
Another thoughtful post! I love the fall, but love to linger in the summer too!
ReplyDeleteI hope you're doing well, and enjoying your weekend!
It has never occurred to me that pumpkins would rot so fast n the coast. See what you can learn blogging. ;))
ReplyDeleteAutumn is my favorite time of year and I love your photos in today's post.
ReplyDeleteI cannot believe the price of pumpkins in the stores. We grew ours last year, but forgot to plant them this year. There is a pumpkin farm just outside of town and their pumpkins are a bit pricey too. I've done a bit of artificial decorating inside to warm things up. I love the pinecones and pumpkins. I have lots of pine cones. Might steal your idea for a centerpiece. It really is lovely. I do love your summer header, but I am looking forward to seeing what you do for autumn. It'll be cool.
ReplyDeleteI'm slowly getting into fall deco- not because I am hanging on to summer tho- I am so ready to see that season leave town on a speeding train!
ReplyDeleteLooks like Fall at your place. The pumpkins get frozen here then when it warms they rot..really messy..sometimes the handle comes out all by itself:)
ReplyDeleteYou make them look better than most. I don't know if you link up at all but this would fit in nicely at "you know where".
