Yesterday we got our first
“real” snow, the kind that
will probably outstay it’s
welcome, and do a thaw
freeze combo that makes
me think of old vanilla
ice cream.
Tasteless, yucky, and slightly
dirty.
Yesterday I loved it, today
well it’s still pretty as it hangs
out on all of the branches.
But ask me again after four months of slushy and dirty sand covered roads how I feel about it, I
am sure I will be wanting it to be gone.
That first snowfall is like a visit to the dentist, you dread it, and then when it’s over, you realize it’s not so bad. And you wonder why you dreaded the visit, until the next time, when it starts all over again.
Along with the snow, we had our first power outage of the season, and when I called the electrical company to report it they were completely unaware it was out, [great job smart meters]. The lovely lady, in hot and sunny India, asked if my neighbours were without power also…but since we are the only ones around here that get up really early it was hard to tell if anyone else was awake.
I guess more then a few neighbours did without their morning coffee.
It’s coming up on our first year of the move to the Okanagan, and our Muddy Boot Dreams, it seems that only yesterday we found out that we were moving in 2 weeks, and the rush was on.
It’s been a year of changes, hopes, and dreams come true, and the adventure continues on.
But as for the snow, ask me again in four months….
Jen @ Muddy Boot Dreams
First snow is always magical and pretty, probably because we haven't seen it for so long. But you are totally right, in 4 months (probably less) it won't be any of those things it will just be annoying.
ReplyDeleteJen girl , I laughed out loud about your comment with the woman from sunny India (too funny girl!)
ReplyDeleteWe are all wondering here what kind of winter we will end up with .. last year was just so shocking with no snow .. we need enough to subdue the water table a little at least .. make nature calmer about our moisture content ! and me ? wink wink
Joy
PS .. I have new snow booties to try out ... eventually!
beautiful photos, I remember you preparing to move, exciting times, you will be ready for the snow to go in four months, (us too) but you will also be looking forward o it again next Fall, its not all bad, its home right?
ReplyDeleteI hear you ! No snow here just fog and warmer then usual temps . I like the first snow fall it is soo pretty and I like to get out there and take photos . Awesome photos by the way ! Have a good day !
ReplyDeleteI love the picture with spot of red. The first snow is always the best snow, especially first thing in the morning. But it does get old quickly, yet aren't you glad your are living your dream?
ReplyDeleteSnow is definately a 2 sided coin in my world.
ReplyDeleteIts beautiful to sit in my warm cozy home and look at but miserable to go out and deal with.
thank you for the beautiful photos.
Beautiful photos, Jen! But don't post these in another 4 months and expect me to say nice things about them! LOL I am so thankful the snow has held off so far. One year we got a Hallowe'en blizzard and the snow didn't melt until the end of March.
ReplyDeleteP.S. Love that bit of red barn in the white photo!!
Hi Jen, Don't tell anyone..but it is warm and sunny here..and I will sit out in the sun today..again! I am so loving the warmer than back at home where they got mega snow too! Have a fun weekend:)
ReplyDeleteThe first snow is so pretty! We are contemplating moving up north. I'm not sure which is worse, the burning hot summers here or the long winters up there! Four months - that's a long time!
ReplyDeleteLove the quiet of a snowfall. You are not quite awake and listen to the silence and realize there is bright light behind the window covering. All unsightly things are covered ~ just white heaps of contour. I’m long gone from winter’s magic so I’ll enjoy yours and count my blessings. Bittersweet memories, Jen. Thanks for sharing your lovely photos, Jen.
ReplyDeleteI love the first snowfall and through the Christmas season, but it definitely gets tedious having to shovel the driveway every day! The birdhouse photo is so pretty :-)
ReplyDeleteYou mean customer service for your local power company is outsourced to India??? oh my god.
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way about snow. The first snowfall is rather magical. Then the next two or three are lovely. Then I"m over it.
xo

First snowfalls are the best when you can look into the distance and see a pristine white blanket that has not been marred by any footprints... Cheers!
ReplyDeleteI share your thoughts about snow, but once it settles in, I just deal with it. Rain and snow fell here last night, so this morning it is an icy mess.
ReplyDeleteThis is the third snow this season: the others melted quickly because the ground was still warm. That's not happening this time. It's here, and it will stay.
Oh squeal - how beautiful! (Still waiting for ours to arrive...)
ReplyDeleteIt is really gorgeous though.
ReplyDeleteI agree Jen. The first snowfall of the season is always the prettiest. I love the last photo! At least you have power again. I had trouble accessing your blog until just now. I tried many times in the past 3 hours. Wonder what's up? A couple of others were acting that way too and my emails wouldn't deliver as they said my server was down. weird.
ReplyDeleteSnow was a major reason why we moved from Massachusetts to Washington state -- to get away from it. I remember very well how ugly it is, and how much I dreaded every single storm. I do not miss it.
ReplyDeleteThe snow looks very pretty to my eyes. But, then, we haven't had any yet. :))
ReplyDeleteIt is nice when it's clean and fluffy. I love the first shot. Happy Almost Anniversary!
ReplyDeleteI love the first snow, too, Jen! But I do agree,,,dirty snow is ugly! And I hate to drive in it
ReplyDeleteI hope you have your power back!
XO,
Jane
Very pretty pics, Jen. John is originally from MI and feels like you do about snow. Hard to believe it's been a year since the move. Continued happiness to you guys!
ReplyDeleteHi Jen, Your snow is beautiful. I wasn't too far off when I guessed that you'd have your first snow on the 14th of November..
ReplyDeleteI love snow as long as I don't have to drive in it.. I guess we'll be waiting a while here in Va. before we get any measurable white stuff.. I hope we get more than we got last year~~~hardly any !
My family and I raked leaves and spread them on my flower beds today.. I think they are good protection for the smaller plants..
Enjoy your snowy weekend.
Charlotte
You are so right about the first snows they are beautiful and exciting, but their welcome is short lived. Stay warm. Enjoy the beauty around you.
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures!! When we lived in Alaska I used to love the first few snowfalls too, but then by April I was done with it--As for now, I love the snow, but I like it melted by the time I have to drive to work! :-)
ReplyDeleteYour snow photos are lovely Jen. I keep saying I don't want snow this year, and I hear it's not an annual thing, but I have to admit...since I'm still so giddy about being here, it might be kind of fun to experience...once. :-)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful pictures Jen. I think this must be how my parent's felt about the snow. We moved to FL when I was fifteen, so I still have the fun memories as opposed to the realities it must have imposed. It's hard to believe you've been there almost a year! I remember when I knew we would be relocating - I came upon your blog about house hunting and thought it was so funny, frustrating and in the end helpful for when I had to sell (which it didn't - but rented) our house. I diligently went out and scooped up dog poop and made sure the litter box was non-offensive - if such a thing is possible. So glad you are upon your first year mark - I wonder what we will be doing and where in CA we will be at our 1st year?? Ann
ReplyDeleteI've lived in some cold, snowy places and understand the dread of snirt - snow + dirt. You're electrical company's customer service is in India? It's a good thing you didn't request a home visit!
ReplyDeleteThe snow does look pretty in your photos, hopefully we don't get any this winter. One can only hope.
ReplyDeleteLOL Jen, your comments about smart meters and BC Hydros 'customer service' agents made me laugh out loud! How is it we can wax so poetic about the snow and the cold in November and be complaining bitterly by the end of December?! It does look beautiful now but I agree that we won't be quite so charitable in a few months time! Lovely pictures as always, you guys got a bunch more snow than we did by the looks of things! Deb
ReplyDeleteWho won the first snowfall giveaway? I didn't enter but thought of it reading this post.....it's like everything else in life that we want so...we tire of it....a year already? sheesh.
ReplyDeleteLove the first snowfall and your photos are gorgeous as always, Jen. It is warm here this weekend, in the 70's, but we have a chance of some snow in a couple of days. That's Kentucky weather for you. I've just marked my calendar for March 11 to see if you are ready for it to be gone :)
ReplyDeleteHugs,
Laura
I think I won't ask, because I have a feeling I know the answer. I would hate having snow this early. Here the weather is unusually warm and windy this weekend, with occasional rain. Also, I hate having to deal with call centers overseas. I have no ill will toward the people in India, but there has to be a better way for them to grow economically.
ReplyDeleteGreat post!Having grown up in New England,I can totally relate but now living in Virginia,I can honestly day I have snow envy.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos! I know if I lived up north with snow I'd be tired of it after 4 months too.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this first snow of the year.
FlowerLady
Still waiting for our first but I can tell you after a month, 2 tops, that I am done with it...
