Five common blogging photo mistakes

1-untitled-0909

It’s no secret that blogs that

use great photos are among

those that are the most popular.

A great quality blog photo added

to well written content, turns the

post into one that engages your

reader and keeps them coming

back for more. How do you

take a great photo? You practice

edit, tweak, and play with the

shot until you feel it’s ready to

post, just like you do with your

content.

Here are some simple solutions to help you out if you are making these 5 common blogging photo mistakes. And at the by the end of the post see if you can spot the one mistake that I have made.

1. Using on camera flash, everything looks washed out, harsh, the whites have lost all detail. What to do?

Solution: Turn off the flash on your camera.

Set up your indoor shots near a bright window and use a large piece of white cardboard to reflect

light onto your subject.

2. Using too many shots of the same angle, each photo looks like a clone of the one before it, and it’s boring your reader.

Solution: Change it up, add something, take away something. Shoot from below, over top, the sides, grab the readers interest by changing the subject, or the angle. Make this a habit while shooting and you won’t regret it.

3. Using too many images in a blog post, it’s photo overload, there are too many images, and the reader starts scanning through the blog post trying to get to the end faster.

Solution:  Break up the blog post into two parts.  Or use the extra photos for another post.  Not every photo you take needs to be posted.  Aim for quality, not quantity. Teach yourself to take less photos while taking the time to compose the shot, rather then just clicking away aimlessly.

4. Not using images that support your blog post. The photos you used in the post have nothing to do with the subject you wrote about, and it confuses the reader. Example, they are reading a post on making cupcakes, expecting to see a food image, and instead see a image of a dog because that’s all you had.

Solution: Think ahead and shoot what you need for your blog posts.   Shoot some everyday images that can be used for different posts, or shoot something that illustrates a blog idea in your head. Don’t have the right photos, work the post around the photo subject, and try to keep the image connected in some way to the subject.

5. Not watermarking your photos.  Posting photos on your blog without watermarking, or adding metadata first.  Making it even easier for thieves to steal your images.

Solution:  Use Picasa, Pic Monkey, or Photoshop to watermark, your images.  I use Picasa, it’s has two different quick and easy ways to add a watermark to all of my images, sure it can be removed, but it takes longer to do so.  You wouldn’t leave your car unlocked, why not watermark your photos, you’ve worked hard to compose and edit the shot, it’s yours, now own it! But remember not to have the watermark so large the image can’t be seen correctly.

Now, did you catch #4, not using supportive images for your post?  Yes, I am guilty myself of not using images that added anything to the blog post.  It’s not set in stone that you have to, but being prepared makes a big difference in the quality of your post.

I hope that these easy hints will help you develop into a better photographer, and avoid the 5 common blogging photo mistakes that we all sometimes make.

  1. I have not watermarked my photos for some time. I thought I had clicked a feature here at blogspot to prevent folks from clicking on my photos to copy. Going to watermark for now on.

I have noticed people commenting less and less on my blog lately. I don't do this to be popular, yet I am slowly increasing in followers so I must be doing something right. Thanks for the tips.

  2. great tips!! The water mark one is the one I forget, well the others probably too! I don't take many photos anymore, my peepers don't work too good.

  3. Thanks for the tips..I am guilty of #4 too! :)

  4. Good tips.

Watermarking is so important, and put it in a place where it is hard to remove.

Another way to slow down others "borrowing" your images is to remove the link to them so they don't open on a page by themselves. For those that aren't too savvy it is harder to snatch an image in the post than it is to grab it on its own.

  5. Great tips Jen. I think I do them all correctly most of the time. You mentioned that there are 2 ways of watermarking on Picasa. I use that for my photos but I'm only aware of the "ABC" text spot to click on. Where is the other? Thanks. Pam P.S. Your photos are beautiful. I love the 2 looking up the tree.

  6. Great information. I hope I'm not going to be graded this morning. I'm still trying to figure out a few of my comments about clutter from yesterday! haha! Have a great day! Happy blogging!

  7. Hello Jen girl (I am in love with that tree no matter how many pictures you post of it .. I absolutely LOVE IT!) .. I am totally uninteresting in the matter of dialog .. I just haven't wanted to really share myself in that sense. But I enjoy reading what others like yourself "put out there". Thanks for the tips !

  9. Funny you should speak of this subject today!!! Anyway, had been thinking about a post since someone asked me if I had taken my photos, and then someone else mentioned that my watermark should show more so people know I took the photos... I just read somewhere to make your photomark more in the "body" of your pic as it makes it harder to "cover over" it, and it can't be cropped out... so, not sure what I'm going to do.

As for pics related to the post, sometimes you can get away with things that don't match, if the post is somewhat inspirational or calming and the photos give that sense... I try to "subliminally" make my pics match my post in a sense, and my titles I try to make it to intrigue the reader as to "what is she writing about today"...

... and, don't you realize your pics actually do match your post this time, because you talk about different angles and you did that with the two trees... you talk about not having different pics (ie. different subjects), which you do and so it supports your topic as an example for the reader, and you talk about flash/no flash, you've just shown us good examples of how a "good" photo is taken! So, well done!

Now, I'm not gonna post about this cause you already have, but would like your thoughts on the watermarks...

...here's hoping I haven't broken too many rules! (grin). Cheers.

  10. I'm guilty of #5. Ack! I know. It just feels too complicated for my little brain to wrap around.

I didn't know I could remove the link to my photos, I'll try that too. Thanks Crafty Gardener.

  11. Good post and nice photos ! I use Live writer for my posts and watermark and the program Lightroom for my photos, it keeps my photos categorized and in order with dates and all as well , If I am to sell any photos I watermark them with our photography logo. I only play around in Lightroom with a few photos though most of mine are as is right out of the camera , It's amazing how much the cameras will do to photos as well. I think we photo nuts are all guilty of #4 hehe ! All images we take have info attached to them so if ya see anyone using them you can prove the photo is yours as the info matches your camera's info when you loaded it on your computer .
Awesome tips though ! Have a good day !

  15. I also like to give each image a useful name - Agapanthus buds, coming up today.

I wanted to link to your horror stories about househunting. Followed the tab to the page and then the posts. I see you've been hit by the same gremlin as me, on some older posts. The images are black holes on those posts!

  18. I'm bad...I posted pictures of pears today and I said nothing at all about pears! Nada! I've tried to figure out how to use watermarks and it all confuses me. I'll try Picasa but can't promise anything. Besides, my pics are so awful, no one would want to steal them!

Thanks for all the advice, Jen.

  21. Great reminders Jen. It's easy to get derailed thinking that every photo you take HAS to be included every time! I also would like to know the 2nd way to watermark on picasa - I only know about adding text. Thanks! Lisa

  23. Thanks, Jen. I am totally laughing about the dog/cupcake thing. I was just giving myself a stern talking to today for not watermarking my photos. I definitely agree with you about too many photos. I tend to go to sleep :)
