How to package kitchen gifts

My Dreams vs. reality

1-Recovered Autosave1

Now that I live so close to

my family, it’s easy to bring

a little something from my

kitchen as a gift each time I

visit.  That’s the easy part, it’s

the packaging that I struggled

with, it’s dreams vs. reality when

I am heading out the door.

I have Martha Stewart

dreams on a

frugal girl’s

budget, and never enough time it seems.

Let’s just say that it bothers me to pay for those cute tin foil containers when I know a perfectly good mason jar, and a brown paper bag is more practical, and fun to play with.  It’s just when it comes down to the wire, the foil container is easier to shove in the tote bag when your husband is waiting at the front door jingling his keys.

Dreams:  I have the best intentions, but it seems never enough time left over to package up the left overs. I needed something that was easy and fast, not to mention really cute to carry those cookies in.

After too many times of running around looking for what I needed at the last minute, I decided to gather together some easy to use coordinating supplies that I could use to wrap, package, and contain almost any kitchen gift I created.

Reality: Brown paper bags, butchers twine, tags in coordinating colors, matching pen to write little notes, mini clothespins, painters paper on a roll, [love that stuff, use it for everything creative] mason jars, and some zip lock bags.

Done like dinner:  It’s so easy now to package up some cookies, cake, soup, or buns, and we all know that if it looks good, it tastes better.  I keep it all in a drawer near the kitchen, and it’s simple to grab what I need, and put it together at the last minute.

Now when I give a gift from my kitchen, it not only tastes great, but it looks great.

  2. Love the plain and simple wrapping. Little circles of material look good on the top of mason jars too. I always seems to have a stash of it in different colours.

  3. I think Martha makes us all look lame. She over does everything. But look at your beautiful gifting! Move over Martha - Jen's got it cased. Fantatic!

  4. Great idea! And I love the idea of keeping it all in one spot. So much nicer than having to hunt in three or four different rooms for the things you need! I also like to package simply like that. I love the look!

  5. Jen love your idea. I have a friend I may have mentioned prior.

I made her two cake loaves. She has broken her foot so I make food items for her and of course enough for her hubby.

Can you suggested how I can make the gift cakes more attractive to give her?

My hubby had made soup as well.

If you make cookies how would you make them attractive in what container or what you would do.

Like you say the store is the sky but what you have shown is very personal.

    I like that.

  6. thats the way I'd want a gift wrapped if I received one. I'd love the cookies but love the jar even more and keep it right on my desk so I could see it often.

  15. I've used the brown paper bags for years, and the little tags you get at Staples, just stamp something on them and maybe color it in with watercolors or colored pencils. Wondering where you get the painters paper or butcher paper? And I agree w/you, I detest spending money for those expensive tags that are probably going to be thrown out. Homemade ones are far cuter. I'm also a big fan of raffia!

  19. I have always loved the look of a plain brown paper bag. So much can be done with them, including just leaving them to be themselves, simple and practical. What great ideas you have planted in my brain (what's left of it) and must say I love that little frog prince. Ann

  22. What a wonderful idea. I love the simplicity of it all!!! I just received a basket from a friend and she lined the basked with a scrap of 'fall like material' There was enough to help my granddaughter make a doll dress. So fun to use and re-use.
