It’s time to change the colors
up, the leaves are falling, the
brown branches glint with rain
drops, and the even the clouds
look greyer. It’s the start of
another season, the chill, crisp
the white that is to come.
Today I am so over orange
I am tired of pumpkins, and
gourds, and Halloween.
It’s done, it’s over
and now we can move on.
I’m looking forward to calm crisp whites, and natural brown branches with touches of silver in my life now.
I am so over orange, for today at least. The neighbours dog stole my special
warty gourd from the front door, I suppose she thought it was a ball, “I was saving that, for next
years seeds” I yelled at her as we backed out of our driveway.
There is a reason I don’t like Halloween, it was a few years ago that thieves broke into our neighbours condo just as we went to bed. Slipped opened the window and went in. Our neighbour fled out his hallway door as they came in, we stood in the rain and listened to them trash everything inside looking for items that were easy to sell.
It was scary, dark, and wet, and we knew that they had just been on our deck minutes before because we heard them, even though the lights were on in our bedroom.
They did eventually catch up with the fingerprints, but we all know that the revolving door lets them out fast.
So no, Halloween isn’t my favourite, but bad memories fade, and seeing the little faces with such bright eyes is a good replacement for scary nights spent in the rain.
I am so over orange for another year, bring on the fresh white of new snow.
Jen @ Muddy Boot Dreams
Here we go again ;)! So, orange is not my totally favourite colour either, however, I am trying to come to terms with it and have found orange and aqua go quite lovely together!
ReplyDeleteHalloween isn't a holiday we celebrated much, being born in Scotland we had what was called Guy Fox night and it carried with it a similar theme, but a different celebration, and I don't remember partaking in it too much... I just don't get the point of carrying around a "pillowcase" to be filled with candy, mind you, when I was a kid I had different thoughts on that :), anyway the idea of "trick or treat" was that we actually had to do something to get that treat like say a poem or sing a song, it just wasn't handed to us without giving something in return!...
..it's always nice to see the new set of colours come in as each season changes though, isn't it! Hugs.
(P.S. how many posts can you find in that, I'm counting at least three (not including the one in draft... and a challenge post to boot (so that makes 4)! [snicker])
It's hard to believe that November 1st is here. I don't like Halloween either. Not for any particular reason. I'm just not a dress up kind of gal and I hate my doorbell ringing all night! Haha! Glad your neighbour stayed safe at least!
ReplyDeleteHappy November!
xo Catherine
I like orange in little bits and pieces. I am not a fan of Hallowe'en. Like Heather growing up in Britain we didn't celebrate it then, but I think they do now. I don't even consider it a holiday as it is declared here. I'm not looking forward to the dull and dreary November days though.
ReplyDeleteGood morning and happy 1st of November Jen, I love the oranges, golds, browns, yellows while it's Sept. and Oct. but now that it's Nov. I'm ready for beautiful reds, greens, and gorgeous white snow.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry that you had such a bad experience on one of your Halloweens. Not good !
We had probably 30 kids of all ages, sizes last night.. We treated them til eight o'clock and then turned off the outside light. The children should be at home at that time of night. It was cold and damp here in Va.
Now, today, I'll work on putting away my witches and scarecrows for another season. When I had my own little sewing business I enjoyed making the dolls and sold them at craft shows.
Enjoy your day and hug your kitty for me.
Hugs, Charlotte
that must be a terrifying memory! Did the police not come?Wow they sure had nerve didn't they, I'm sorry the neighbors dog stole your gourd, do they not have to tie up their dogs where you live.Even in the rural areas here there are laws that dogs cannot run wild,
ReplyDeletemaybe you could call the owners and they could bring it back! I can truly understand why you're ready for orange to leave, I hope today is a better day for you,
ReplyDeleteWhat terrible memories of a Halloween past!
ReplyDeleteOh what an awful experience. So sorry you're sick of orange. Its one of my favorite colors. I have variations of orange all over my house. In fact you've just inspired my next post!!! Thanks
ReplyDeleteOh Jen, you have become the crazy lady yelling out the car window as she drives off. Lol.
ReplyDeleteI am loving your new country persona.
I am in no hurry for snow that is for sure but the orange thing can get a little tiresome.
Kids love Halloween, don't they. My daughter asks why is it a day for girls to dress up like hookers? I had my first trick or treater last night since we moved to the Garden Spot, a grandson of an old neighbor's. I did have some good candy on hand that I will take to school tomorrow to bribe the freshman to participate in class at 8 AM. Orange? I love to see the orange as I drive through town to work. I will miss the brilliant colors. The prairie gets pretty darn dull and brown over the winter, unlike winter in the mountains. Love the frozen flowers photos.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed dressing up and going door to door, as a kid. It was an adventure and there was all that yummy loot to be had. As an adult, the charm is no longer there for me. October 31st is an unremarkable day for me and largely forgettable.
ReplyDeleteAs for orange...it's probably the only colour I really dislike to any degree.
What a terrible memory. I am shocked that they continued to ramsack with people listening and watching. Were they armed. Hmmmmmm, I might think of being armed in that case. Glad that you have moved but what a terrible thing to happen. My parents lived in a neighborhood with one entrance. They left to go out to eat with another couple. Just minutes after they left they went back because someone forgot their purse. Someone broke in during that short time. They had to be watching. Scarey scarey.
ReplyDeleteI was in a bah humbug mood yesterday. Then I went to the elementary school to watch the kids parade in their costumes. They were so excited and so unaware of all the tragedy around. It lifted my spirits.
You already know how I feel about Halloween, but my experience is minor compared to yours. I'm glad you and your neighbor got out of the situation safely and that you are in a safe place now. I bet the four-legged thief tired of the gourd, and you can find it forgotten under a shrub. Give it a good scrub and tuck it away for the seeds.
ReplyDeleteWhat a terrible memory is right.
ReplyDeleteWhat happend to you. For sure would turn off me Halloween.
Rather scary.
I do like orange. I like your leaves. The one with the snow too.
That would be a terrifying experience and feeling of helplessness for sure Jen! I still have my orange and rust out but only for a few more days. I need to get inspired. Maybe some colder weather will do it. Not that I want cold and I don't like snow or dark short days. But, white, cream and silver decor will definitely lighten things up for the Christmas season. I just need to get psyched about it. Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteOh that was a nasty experience for all being broken into ! I do like orange but I to am looking forward to the winter wonderland of snow sticking to trees , icicles forming and all the beauty that comes with winter , another wonderful canvas for me to photograph ! Lovely post and photos ! Have a great day !
ReplyDeletePoor orange is taking a beating today. Not to worry, I still have a passion for fall decorating using orange, rust and yellow. Whatever the season I borrow from nature and go with it. Not a fan of Halloween as I had a similar experience to yours when I was younger. To this day the experience left a mark. Here in the lower forty-eight we will keep our fall decorations through the end of November. Then,woo-hoo, down they will come for all things wintery ~ mistletoe, holly and those horrid wilting plastic blow-up snowmen in other people’s yards. Happy November, Jen, from a proud supporter of orange.
ReplyDeleteI will SOON be all over orange but for today I will leave it up until our early Thanksgiving- and then it is ALL gone for another year. Have a wonderful night- xo Diana
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite decor looks (winter or summer) is the look of fresh, starched linens and breezy cotton. I'll bet you'd be completely at home in winter home like that. I've been thinking that I need to add more to my own world. Sweep out the orange, bring in the winter whites!
ReplyDeleteGood evening! Sorry it was not a good day for you yesterday. It is the start of a new month, your photos depict what it is like outside these days. Great shots. Today we had a heavy mist/fog day. Wished I had my camera with me.
ReplyDeleteWell I do like orange leaves and oranges as in the fruit. Pretty tasty. Hate hate hate thieves. Here in Arizona, many of them are shot and killed if they enter a home. So while it does happen, it's at their own risk:)
ReplyDeleteYour photos were amazing. I loved every one of them.
ReplyDeleteOver orange...Not me ever. I love orange. I understand what you are saying though. I have just never been a fan of Halloween. I'm ready for Thanksgiving too.
I do like to celebrate our American Thanksgiving, before the winter colors appear, but I start the Christmas decorating in the middle of November, just because we do so much.
ReplyDeleteSorry about your gourd being carried off by that pesky dog. I would have yelled, Too :)
Hugs,
Laura
Orange is not my favorite color either. Trauma from the seventies I think. LOL! (I also hate olive green). I am trying to get over it and add more to the garden. After all , all the fall flower colors have some orange in them so if i want more flowers in the fall garden I have to get over the trauma of orange. Have a wonderful weekend Jen.
ReplyDeleteCan't agree with you on this one. I am an orangophile, if that's a word. It starts with orange butterflyweed, then extends to various tulips, daylilies, and even roses (Westerland). And even during winter, there's pumpkin pie, sweet potatoes, butternut squash ... oh yes, and oranges! Hmm, mostly foods I guess, but what's wrong with that?
