Leave the porch light on

1-Swans -0185

The food bank is a organization

that more and more families

and individuals are finding

themselves using, even if they

don’t want to have to resort to it.

Our local Realtors have put

together a program that makes

me proud to live here.  Early in

the week they distributed empty

bags to the homes in our

town/township, and last night they

picked them up after we filled them

with non perishable items for the food bank.

The program is simple, fill your bag with donated food, place it outside your front door, and leave your porch light on.  The Realtors drive by with volunteers and pick up all the donations.

We ended up donating twice because someone [me] thought that it was last week, and that we had missed the pickup date.  If you have a chance please donate what you can to your local food bank, I am sure that they could use the donation.

The other day I got a phone call from my Sister, drop everything and go to this road in the middle of nowhere….she gave me what sounded like complex directions, and told me to take my camera.

I finally figured out the destination was a side road on the way to her farm, and there in front of me was a field full of swans.

It was kind of hard to get close to them because they were a little leery of me on foot, but had no worries about the vehicles that passed by.  And you can see even with a telephoto lens it’s hard to catch the detail, but I did my best.

That’s my swan quota for the year, no swan dive there.

  2. I'm glad you listened to your sister. The swans are so pretty contrasting with the dark dirt. Lucky shots!!!

  3. Beautiful pictures. Food drives are the best ever to participate in and our area makes it so easy to participate. Even the grocery store sets up a big bin for us to drop a canned food in each time we visit.

  4. Our local fire fighters collect for the food bank too, and I just did a post that will go up in a few days about it. Great captures of the swans. We were driving by a field the other day and there was a flock of turkeys (post coming later on that one too)

  5. Those are great photos! What an opportunity. And now you know about another pretty road in your 'new' community. :) The food drive idea is great. Once a year Tim Horton's sends a paper bag in the mail for people to put non-perishable food items in but you have to drop them off at one of their shops. I never get it done. :(

  6. Now that was a beautiful sighting. Our food bank here has had such increases in the people who are in need this year that they are always running out now. It is sad to see so many in need. I think that is a wonderful idea your local food bank has for collecting to help.

  8. The Knights of Columbus at our church furnish big blue bags around the major holidays. They give them to us one week, we bring them back the next weekend. This makes it easy to give to the foodbank. It is a good cause.

  9. Yes they are Tundra Swans . We get thousands of them here for migration , there is a conservation here that tags and keep count every year and feeds them grains in the fields so they can do their bird watch ! Every Christmas Papa and I take a big bag of perishable food to the fire hall and they deliver it to the food bank. You might find this website all about the swans interestinghttp://longpointwaterfowl.org/research/staff/past-staff-research/tundra-swans/ . Great photos. Have a good day !

  10. That's an excellent idea and a wonderful program. Well done.

I'm profoundly grateful that I've never been in a situation where I've had to avail myself of the generosity of the foodbank, however I have a friend who has and I have no doubt that it was a humbling experience.

  11. I think your pictures are amazing! This past spring I helped to organize a county wide food drive and saw that the need and the grateful appreciation from all those who benefit from it. It makes you thankful for what you have. I've no doubt the food drive you participated in will make a big difference too.

  14. Jen, you always stir the soul with your photographs. Your sister is a great look-out. Something nourished from childhood? It’s a wonderful time of the year to show gratitude by giving. The minds image of all those porch lights is beautiful. Great community you have chosen. Enjoy!

  15. This "moving" food bank sounds like an excellent idea. I wish they had something like that here. They would get many more donations with it being so convenient. Good for you for donating.

What an odd sight (the swans). We have them all over the lake and they can be very mean so I'm not too fond of them. But I've never seen them fly so I really love your photo!

  20. Wow, Jen. I love that your sister sent you to that field of swans, one of nature's most beautiful birds. We have many food drives in our city and they are so important this time of year and to help feed the hungry all year long.

  22. That's awesome for two reasons... One: you got to photograph those beauties and Two: your sister called you to tell you about it so you could! Awesome!
