Baby it’s cold outside
and it’s white everywhere
you look.
There are massive
mounds of the white stuff
piled besides driveways
coating shrubs, hanging
on trees, and perching
precariously on the
rooftops. It’s a snow dump
extraordinaire…and there is
a lot more to come until it’s
done for the season.
It’s cold, and it’s white, and while that may be pretty for now, we are still in the post Christmas
high that will slowly recede into the January blahs.
And then the when is winter going to go away February blues, the this is madness March, and can you believe we still have snow in April.
What a cruel joke to play on a gardener.
But it’s easy enough to trick the mind into believing that there is a everlasting summer if you live in your computer archives. Gracefully sail through the storms by clicking on cosmos, picking a petunia favourite, and falling for ferns. Bleeding hearts are blooming in my archives, and sunflowers turning towards the light, the birds chirp, and the spring blossoms unfold into a riot of color.
One look and I am transported to another world, the snow piling up outside my window forgotten, and the sweet green of new leaves is in my nose.
I am celebrating the first Hosta bloom, tasting the fresh herbs, I can actually feel the sun warm my freezing bare toes. Watch the Boo cavort in the green grass, and listen to the new tenants chirp to their babies.
And then when I turn my head towards the window this all screeches to a halt…reality is, it’s white out there. But if I click my mouse on a file, it’s a everlasting summer.
Guess where I will be?

What a great post filled with beauty and glimpses of spring and summer beauty in your gardens. It is neat how photos either our own, or others can take us to ports/gardens that we've seen or haven't seen and joy fills our hearts.

Ummm...you will be lost in computerland? lol I do NOT like winter- xo Diana
ReplyDeleteAhhh, great post Jen. And so true. Beautiful summer photos! I was feeling quite proud yesterday that I don't mind winter this year but you're so right that this white stuff will still be around in April and we have so much more to go through yet. We're going to hit zero celsius today and around there for 3 more days. A January thaw followed by January freeze up and more snow. :S
ReplyDeleteJust think of all of that wonderful moisture going into the soil to grow beautiful things in the Spring! Love your photos...enjoy your day my friend!
ReplyDeleteThank heavens for those files of beautiful flowers. They will tide you over until spring!!!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos and encouraging to those of us who live in the winter wonderland - just like the seed catalogs that come to cheer us.
ReplyDeleteI call January the month of crummy snow or even ugly snow. Here it has be so cold, barely above freezing. We do not get a large amount of snow here, so what we do have lingers and lingers. It is nice to retreat to our archived garden, and just as nice to see that someone else shares our winter blahs. And don't you think that your little beauties will be just as glad to see you in the spring? Great photos.
ReplyDeleteYou almost transported me to Spring and then jolted me back to reality!! We haven't had snow yet, just cold weather. It would be ok with me if we don't have any at all.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful writing.
Judy
Great post - the world beyond my window is white and brown, too. Thanks for the bit of color this morning.
ReplyDeleteNice post. At least you have white while we have grey here. Yes, I agree with looking at photos of flowers and sunshine helps ease the winter blues.
ReplyDeleteI cannot imagine snow until April. It is always so lovely to look at in the first snows but all the white does start to get to you when you love the colors of the garden. LOL! Thank heavens for the digital world of pictures now where we can just snap away without fear of film costs. :) Looking back gives us some comfort and hope for spring to come. Beautiful pictures as always Jen.
ReplyDeleteWhat pretty colors for a cold winter's day. But I really like the last photo, too, of the snow piled on the bird house. Great image!
ReplyDeleteJen, We had so much snow piled on one street in town...I was calling it the Matterhorn. The city workers scooped it up and hauled it to the park. They pile all our town snow in the swimming pool parking lot, cause no one is visiting the pool.:):) I am dreaming of flowers also. Spring will be her before we know it.(keep saying to yourself) xoxo,Susie
ReplyDeleteThat is the same thing I have been doing. Looking at all the summer pretties. I still need to move files together to burn onto cd's for safe keeping, in case my computer goes bunko. I love your flower pictures that you posted today.
ReplyDeleteLovely photos ! I have added a spring countdown to my blog as I am now awaiting spring . It is mild with some sunny periods and our snow is melting, we can see green grass, we are to be having rain by weekend ! Have a good day !
ReplyDeleteHi there Jen girl
ReplyDeleteI too love to get lost in my photos and try not to hear the darn snow plough and side walk cleaner doing it's thing .. yuck !
What would we do without out pictures eh ?? LOL
Joy : )
exceeding grateful that mound of white is behind glass, AND virtual glass. We have still gentle weather but the weatherman threatens a hotter summer this year.
ReplyDelete"Snow dump extraordinaire" -- yep, I have that here, too. Ha! Thinking about March and April snow is, frankly, depressing. But it happens here, too. Fortunately, I hope to get away to Florida in March, which should help! I'm with you--escape to the virtual warmth and beauty when the winter blahs hit!
ReplyDeleteWell, I won't be outside if there's any white stuff here. They put me back in the steel boot today...

Jen, I don’t know where Frankie lives. Some of these spring gardening inspirations framed and hung in your exercise area might be a welcome sight. They all seem too lovely to be held captive on a computer screen.
ReplyDeleteThank goodness for photos of summer.
ReplyDeleteWe are having a January thaw this week .. Lots of dripping and melting goin on and temperatures climbing to +8 or maybe more.
Look at the bright side... at least you have a lot of light reflecting off all that beautiful white stuff. Like you mentioned in your previous post, it makes for a good light reflector. We, on the other hand, are dealing with grey dreary days socked in with a thick fog that doesn't let any light through. I'd rather have bright and chilly.
ReplyDeleteWhile I love my garden in white I am living and blogging in memories of color...we can have winter from Oct-April but typically it is Dec to March or early April...it is cruel...4 ft here and a warm up this week in the 40s.
ReplyDeleteNow that was beautiful..I needed that today..I will be in my archives:)
ReplyDeleteYou are right, and I spend more and more time looking at those pictures from the days of warmer weather.
